When you’ve got seven minutes to spare, this is a much-watch video about the Mormon church’s financial role in helping to pass Proposition 8, the constitutional amendment outlawing same-sex marriage in California. In response to an investigation by the California Fair Political Practices Commission, the church has maintained that it spent only a few thousand dollars on the Yes on 8 campaign. However, this report from the American News Project appears to uncover convincing evidence that the amount was much larger than that. The Internal Revenue Service forbids churches from “substantially” lobbying for political legislation, and some say the federal government should strip the church of its tax-exempt status in response to its involvement with Prop 8.
