BEST BURGER
Hunky’s
4000 Cedar Springs Road. 214-522-1212
Monday-Thursday 11 a.m.-10 p.m., Friday-Saturday 11 a.m.-11 p.m., Sunday 12 p.m.-10 p.m.

The essential attraction of a good hamburger is its simplicity: ground beef, maybe a little salt, grilled to order (medium rare is best). Maybe you wanna add cheese that’ll work. Ditto lettuce, tomato, onion. Some extravagance (avocado, bacon) can be an option but isn’t required. Like the hot dog, the hamburger is basic American food.

But because everyone can make them and nearly everyone does how can one burger joint stand out? If you’re Hunky’s, you stand out by offering a consistently agreeable burger without much fanfare. And having a good name on your restaurant doesn’t hurt.

Part of Hunky’s appeal is the patty itself. Who needs soy burgers or ground kobe steaks when some good, delectable not-so-lean beef reminds you that the human body craves a little fat in its diet? Fry it up, slap it on a bun, garnish to taste, add a side of fries and dig in. Wait for it: The hot meat, the slight crunch of cool lettuce, the tang of mustard. It’s why being a carnivore has never gone totally out of style.

But the best burger joints aren’t totally about the food, anyway. With patio seating in the heart of Cedar Springs, Hunky’s allows you to dine on a delicious hamburger while watching the parade of gay life pass before your eyes. Hot guys, sexy women, gym bunnies, bears, glamorous female impersonators. You can see it all from Hunky’s stoop, and for some reason, food always tastes better not just when you sit outside, but when you are just out.

BEST BREAKFAST SPOT
Cafe Brazil
Various Locations
Seven days a week, 24 hours
www.cafebrazil.com

It’s hard to imagine a time in Dallas before Cafe Brazil. That’s probably because, back then, the city was bleary-headed for lack of caffeine. This funky java house, which opened its first Lakewood shop in 1991, has only been in Oak Lawn since 1999. How quickly it has become an institution. And for good reason.

The selection of Cafe Brazil as Best Breakfast Spot owes in large part to the ability to order breakfast 24 hours a day, seven days week. And what a menu it is: Omelettes filled with fresh veggies and spicy chorizo; thick-cut French toast topped with creme Anglaise and walnuts; breakfast rellenos served with fried sweet potatoes; and perhaps best of all, the signature pancrepes when rolled over ripe berries, there are few more delicious eye-openers for the price to be found anywhere in town. Any one of these items hits the spot, no matter whether “breakfast” means a quick bite in the morning on the way to work, a lazy repast over the Sunday morning paper or a post-clubbing stop to settle the stomach after last call.

Then there’s the bottomless cup of coffee and what coffee it is. Luscious flavors like chocolate raspberry swirl, snickerdoo and creme brulee; dark roasts from Colombia, Costa Rica and Kenya; and specialty sips like almond or rocky road latte.

Sound mouthwatering? Then you know why voters considered Cafe Brazil the premier place to sit down for a morning nosh.
