I’m speechless. Anti-gay Texas Sen. John Cornyn, who once equated us to “box turtles,” told The Hill on Monday that he might not oppose a Supreme Court nominee based on sexual orientation.
“As long as it doesn’t interfere with their job, it’s not a particular issue,” said Cornyn, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee.
I’m not sure what prompted Cornyn to make this statement, but I’d be willing to bet that he hasn’t suddenly had a change of heart on LGBT issues. After all, if he really believes this, he’d sign on as a co-sponsor of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, and we all know that won’t happen. Maybe Cornyn realizes that opposing a Supreme Court nominee based on sexual orientation wouldn’t play well politically in swing districts, where people don’t really care much about this issue anymore. Or maybe the reporter simply caught him off guard and he let one slip. I wouldn’t be surprised if Cornyn issues a clarification in the next few days to satisfy his right-wing base in Texas.
