The Executive Committee of the Southern Baptist Convention is recommending that Broadway Baptist Church in Fort Worth be kicked out of the denomination for welcoming gays and lesbians in its congregation. The committee made the recommendation Monday, and “messengers” to the denomination’s annual conventioon today and tomorrow in Louisville must decide whether to accept it. If they do so, it will be the first time SBC has expelled a church simply because it is perceived as being pro-gay, according to this article from The Associated Baptist Press. The recommendation stems from Broadway’s debate 18 months ago about whether to allow photos of gay couples in a directory commemorating the church’s 125th anniversary. The congregation ultimately opted for a compromise under which the directory included only candid and group photos of both gay and straight members, as opposed to family-by-family photos. But apparently that wasn’t good enough for the SBC.
