Woman pleads guilty in case of videotaped beating of trans woman at McDonald’s

Teona Brown, 19, has pled guilty Thursday, Aug. 4, to first degree assault charges and a hate crime charge in connection with the beating of transgender woman Chrissy Polis last April in Towson,

Chrissy Polis

Md. The attack was captured on video by a McDonald’s employee — who filmed the assault rather than step in and try to stop it — last April. The video went viral online and was used, along with new footage from a surveillance camera, in court hearings this week. CBS Baltimore has this report on the plea.

Conviction on a first degree assault charge carries a maximum sentence of 25 years, and a hate crime conviction could add another 10 years. Because Brown pled guilty to the attack, prosecutors are recommending that the judge sentence her to five years in prison. A sentencing hearing has been set for next month.

Polis was present in court on Thursday, but told reporters she was nervous about being there and had no comment. “I just want to lay low and keep my life as normal as possible,” she said.

A second person charged in the attack was 14 at the time and has been charged with assault as a juvenile. Because she is a minor, her identity has not been released.

Below is a video of a news report aired on the Washington, D.C., Fox news program when the attack happened. It includes video of the attack and, as State’s Attorney Scott Shellenberger said this week, “The severity of the beating is much easier to understand when you see a video. They say a picture’s worth a thousand words. Well, a video’s worth a million.”

Did Indian Director Onir Sexually Assault (Possibly Gay) Dunno Y Star Yuvraaj Parashar?

At first we thought Bollywood actor Yuvraaj Parashar was disowned by his family for starring in Dunno Y… Na Jaane Kyun, where he played a gay man in what's been dubbed India's Brokeback Mountain. But is Parashar actually a gay man IRL? In defending the single-name Indian film director Onir — whose films tackled everything from AIDS to gays to abuse — against rumors that he sexually molested Parashar, gay activist Ashok Row Kavi has outed the actor. Or is Parashar's sexuality one big open secret? And are these sexual assault claims legit?

Julius Bartender Attacked In Anti-Gay NYC Assault

Frederick Giunta, 25, was arrested Friday and charged with assaulting two men in a row in New York City's West Village last Tuesday. After robbing and hitting one, Giunta allegedly beat up a bartender at Julius, the storied gay bar, saying to him, "What are you going to do, you fucking nigger. You are a fucking faggot." He's charged with attempted robbery and misdemeanor as a hate crime. Who's exhausted tallying up all the statistics?

Today is SU’s ‘Final Assault’ On Capitol Hill

Today, Servicemembers United is hosting a lobby day for supporters of DADT repeal. It’s called the “Final Assault.” That’s an appropriate name, because the next few days could make or break the effort to end DADT. If we can’t even get the compromise DADT language passed, we’re in trouble.

Today, they’ll be working the Hill to get Senators on board. And, they’ve clearly laid out the ask:

1) OPPOSE a motion to strike the repeal amendment from the bill
2) OPPOSE any replacement or substitute repeal amendment
3) OPPOSE any attempt to modify the repeal amendment in the bill
4) OPPOSE any filibuster attempt
5) SUPPORT final passage of the bill

The first hurdle is the filibuster attempt. As we reported yesterday, McCain is planning to block the Defense Authorization bill from even getting to the floor. Yep, choosing his own personal prejudices and homophobia over legislation to fund our troops and our military operations during two wars. The vote to end the filibuster should come next Tuesday. It is going to be a big test.

Support SU’s efforts today. You’ve got the talking points. Call your Senators. Like these young people in Colorado did. The Senate switchboard number is 202-224-3121.

Watch: Whoopi Goldberg’s Alleged Assault on White House Party Crasher Michaele Salahi

Salahi

Major drama over at The View where Whoopi Goldberg apparently erupted after Michaele Salahi, the White House party crasher who is one of the D.C. Real Housewives, left in tears accusing Whoopi Goldberg of "outrageous abuse" for grabbing her on the air.

In fact, Goldberg touched her on the shoulder.

The Daily Beast:

What set Salahi off was when Goldberg came from backstage and approached Salahi on the air, saying something that was inaudible to viewers. According to Lisa Bloom, the Salahi's lawyer, Goldberg grabbed Salahi’s arm and said, “Move on, move on! Get to the White House!,” in an attempt to steer the conversation toward allegations that the Salahis party-crashed last year. The moment lasted all but a few seconds, but Salahi was apparently unnerved and remarked that she’d been surprised by Goldberg’s appearance. Co-host Sherri Shepherd remarked to the audience, “That’s Whoopi. She don’t come out unless she’s passionate.”

Then, after the show finished taping, Goldberg, according to the Salahis’ lawyer, Lisa Bloom, burst into a room Michaele was sitting in with Tareq and screamed: “I didn’t fucking hit you! Did you say I fucking hit you?”
“She was screaming and dropping the F-bomb many, many times,” Bloom told The Daily Beast exclusively.
Tareq apparently began filming the verbal altercation with his BlackBerry, though Bloom said he only caught “the last few seconds.”

If it wasn't already apparent that the Salahis have a warped view of reality, well…
