Takei, Aiken adding gay fabulosity to new “Celebrity Apprentice”

George Takei

I have sincerely admired George Takei ever since 2005 when he publicly came out as a gay man. And I have been a real fan for the last several months, ever since I “liked” his Facebook page and got the chance to see and appreciate his unique sense of humor.

But I am not a big enough fan to watch George in his new gig, because his new gig is being a cast member of the new season of Donald Trump‘s Celebrity Apprentice. And I hate Donald Trump and I hate Celebrity Apprentice way to much to ever watch the show, even for George T. I made myself a promise after listening to Trump’s “presidential campaign” tripe that I would never watch this show, because I never want to do anything that might even remotely put money in his bigoted pockets.

So, love ya George, but I just can’t watch that show.

There will be at least one other gay in the cast to keep George company: Clay Aiken of American Idol and Spamalot fame. And other “gay interest’ cast members are ’80s pop star Debbie Gibson and equal-opportunity-insult comedian Lisa Lampanelli.

I’m not gonna list the whole cast here. You can go over to FoxNews.com to get that (where, by the way, the describe Takei as “Star Wars actor George Takei”). Let it suffice to say that the cast does include Mafia princess Victoria Gotti and Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider.

HISD trustee distributes anti-gay flier

Rodriquez Flier (excerpt)

Excerpt from the Rodriquez flier attacking Fonseco for his advocacy for LGBT people and his endorsement by the Houston GLBT Political Caucus (click to view full flier)

Houston Independent School District Trustee Manuel Rodriquez Jr. is under fire for an anti-gay flyer attacking his opponent, Ramiro Fonseca. Both seek the HISD District III seat held by Rodriquez. Rodriquez’s flyer attacks Fonseca for his history of advocating for LGBT people, and his endorsement by the Houston GLBT Political Caucus. The flyer also suggests that Fonseca being 52 and unmarried is a reason that Houstonians should not trust him to make decisions affecting children, and points out that he has a “male partner.”

The GLBT Political Caucus was quick to denounce the flyer, issuing a statement on Saturday. “Manuel Rodriguez is assuming the voters of District III share the same bigoted, hateful views he holds,” said Caucus president Noel Freeman. “Houstonians have proven time and time again that such views are not welcome in our City, and have consistently rejected candidates who espouse such hateful views. We urge the voters of District III to reject Manuel Rodriguez on election day.”

Other HISD Trustees have joined in the chorus of people speaking out against the mailer. “I denounce the reprehensible, mean-spirited, bigoted mailer that was sent out in the HISD, District III race,” Trustee Juliet Katherine Stipeche said via her Facebook wall. “I ask my colleagues to maintain and uphold HISD’s total non-discrimination policy and treat every person, including other candidates, with dignity and respect. Let us embrace diversity and equality and treat every person as we would like ourselves to be treated ” Stipeche is seeking re-election to her district VIII seat.

HISD District I member Anna Eastman echoed Stipeche’s comments. “My fifteen year old son could not comprehend why someone would think that distinction would change a vote for school board and would be used as such by a candidate.”

The GLBT caucus is urging people to contact the editorial board of the Houston Chronicle to encourage them to rescind their endorsement of Rodriquez in light of his campaign tactics.

HISD elections are part of the general elections taking place this Tuesday, Nov 8. Visit HarrisVotes.org to find your voting location and view a sample ballot.

Why Did Rep. Louie Gohmert Make It So Easy To Name Him To America’s Most Bigoted Lawmakers List?

Letting gays to serve openly in the military will bring America "toward the end of [its] existence as a great nation," Rep. Louie Gohmert claimed on the House floor yesterday. He might have a point: Letting gays serve openly in Congress has, evidently, opened the doors to guys like Gohmert also holding office and being constitutionally permitted to speak on the House floor. Barney Frank's been serving since 1981; Gohmert got there in 2003. INEVITABLE COURSE OF EVENTS, PEOPLE.

Help Equality NC send Fruit Loops to bigoted State Representative Larry Brown

He wants to talk about Fruit Loops? EqualityNC will send State Rep Larry Brown an all-you-can-eat bonanza…

Take Action!

Over the years, you've no doubt heard plenty of derogatory language targeting the LGBT community. Equality NC supporters, volunteers, and staff are regularly the targets of such slurs, ranging from the unmentionable to the downright silly. (“Homosexualist activists” comes to mind.) And although some of these terms make us roll our eyes, the sentiment they represent is anything but funny.

Last week, State Representative Larry Brown from Kernersville sent an e-mail to 60 of his fellow Republicans in reaction to Equality NC Foundation's announcement of this year's legislative leadership award, which will be presented to NC House Speaker Joe Hackney at the 2010 Equality Gala next month. Rep. Brown's e-mail reads:

I hope all the queers are thrilled to see him. I am sure there will be a couple legislative fruitloops there in the audience.”

Queers? Fruitloops? Really, Rep. Brown?

As of this morning, Rep. Brown has not apologized to his LGBT and allied constituents, nor have any of the 60 colleagues who received the e-mail spoken out against his use of bigoted language.

Well, if it's fruitloops Rep. Brown wants, then that's what we'll give him!

From now until Monday, October 11th, at 5pm, each donation you make to Equality NC in Rep. Brown's name will come with a box of Froot Loops cereal to be delivered to his office, complete with your personal message.

Let's show Rep. Brown and all of our elected officials that anti-LGBT slurs–and the unfair and outdated beliefs that spur them–have no place in our discourse. And let's give Rep. Brown a tangible reminder of the people of our state who refuse to put up with such trash talk by sending him Froot Loops!

Is Bigoted Troop Defender Sen. John Boehner Cheating On His Wife With a Lobbyist?

Mike Stark has made a career, or at least a few blog headlines, by confronting elected officials without appointments and asking them invasive questions. Like whether Sen. Lindsey Graham is a gay, or whether Rep. Patrick McHenry is too close of a friend to Dorothy. Now Stark is back with accusations that House Minority Leader John Boehner, a family values father of two, is cheating on his wife of 37 years with a lobbyist.

Carly Fiorina defends her bigoted position on marriage equality by quoting Obama

Got news for Jim Messina over at the White House, you have a problem. Your boss decided to conveniently flip-flop on marriage equality (he was for it in 1996, then gradually moved against it when running for federal office). And now every single Republican, and religious right leader, is quoting Barack Obama when they want to justify their bigotry on marriage. While the White House has dilly-dallied with how to repeal DADT without really repealing it, and while they’ve run from lifting a finger on either ENDA or DOMA, marriage has catapulted to the forefront of gay America’s demands for full participation in the American dream.

The White House – that would be you, Messina – needs to put a stop to the the right-wing’s use of President Obama as the new mascot for bigotry. It’s time the President came clean on where he really stands on marriage. If he’s truly against it, then gay voters and our allies deserve to know that he actually does stand with Carly Fiorina and the same bigots who wouldn’t let his own parents marry fifty years ago.

Why The Media Won’t Listen to Mike Rogers About Which Bigoted Politicos Are Gay

"This has been a well-known secret in Washington D.C.," Mike Rogers tells Ben & Dave's Six Pack about Ken Mehlman. But professional outer Rogers isn't just livid with the former RNC chairman. He's got beef with the media who continue to refuse to point out the sexuality of anti-gay politicos. "It’s what I call the pact of protection. In which politicians protect the media and the media protects politicians. So the media knows what’s going on. Who owns all these places? Everyone’s biased. If CNN leaves that in [Bill Maher outing Ken Mehlman on Larry King Live], then they will be denied the big guests."
