Axiom Sushi Lounge and AIDS Interfaith Network team up for one-day dining event

On Wednesdsay, Axiom Sushi Lounge will host Making One Meal Matter with AIDS Interfaith Network. From 7–10 p.m., 20 percent of guests’ food bills will go toward AIN’s 10 client-serving programs.

Travis Gasper, director of development at AIN, says, “Our clients are homeless or very low income and living with HIV/AIDS. Each meal matters to them.”

Additional donations will also be accepted throughout the night. So load up on your California Rolls and sashimi.

Game 1 of the NBA Finals

Men with balls

OK, the deja vu of this year’s NBA Finals puts us on edge. The Dallas Mavs and the Miami Heat face off once again, only this time, the Mavs are seeking redemption. The finals start tonight with watching parties all over. Justdon’t start a drinking game on fouls against Dwayne Wade. You’ll get hammered way too fast.

Cedar Springs car show, sidewalk sale postponed

Because of anticipated bad weather, the antique car show and sidewalk sale that was scheduled for Saturday on the Cedar Springs strip has been postponed.

According to Scott Whittall, president of the Cedar Springs Merchants Association, classic car owners are reluctant to exhibit their vehicles on the street in the rain. He noted that rain isn’t conducive to a sidewalk sale, either.

Both the sale and car show have been moved to June 4 and will become part of the revived Razzle Dazzle Dallas event that will be held on the street June 1-5. The car show is in conjunction with the Classic Chassis Car Club.

Russian LGBT leader Nicolai Alekseev speaks tonight

Nikolai Alekseev has become the face of Russia’s LGBT community. He comes to Dallas to discuss the plight and triumphs of gays worldwide and how today’s community can work toward equality everywhere. Gay Liberation Network’s Andy Thayer from Chicago joins Alekseev talking about his experiences in Russia.

Police blotter: Hit-and-run on Cedar Springs

Valentine’s Day got off to a bad start when a motorist intentionally struck two pedestrians near Havana Bar & Grill on Cedar Springs Road early Monday, according to police reports.

Reports say the suspect and the victim, a 39-year-old black male, got into an argument that became a physical fight at about 2 a.m. at 4008 Cedar Springs Road. After a security guard stepped in to break up the fight, the suspect got in a vehicle and intentionally accelerated toward the victim. The suspect’s vehicle struck the victim as well as a witness, before the suspect fled northbound on Cedar Springs Road. The two injured people were taken to Parkland hospital.

Sr. Cpl. Kevin Janse, a spokesman for the Dallas Police Department, said Tuesday that police hadn’t made any arrests.

“Victim is claiming he doesn’t remember what happened,” Janse said. “No one knows the suspect and there are conflicting stories about what really took place. Detectives will continue to try to get to the bottom of what really happened. It is unknown the condition of the victim at this time.”

The suspect’s vehicle is described as a cream-colored, four-door Nissan. Anyone with information can call the Crimes Against Persons Division at 214- 671-3584.

Another deadly shooting in Oak Lawn

Dallas police arrested a man Thursday in Georgia on charges that he fatally shot a 26-year-old woman at his apartment near Carlisle Street and Cedar Springs Road in Dallas. Michael Paul Lucking, 40, had fled to the Atlanta area by the time Dallas police found the woman dead of a gunshot wound to the upper body.

And today, the Dallas Morning News’ Scott Goldstein reports another fatal shooting in Oak Lawn.

“Dallas homicide detectives are on scene of a reported fatal shooting at Lemmon and Welborn, on the edge of Oak Lawn near Uptown,” Goldstein wrote on Twitter moments ago.

UPDATE: The Dallas Police Department reports at 11:46 a.m.: “Many of you have been calling and inquiring about a shooting that occurred at 3500 Welborn. That shooting appears to be a suicide with a note and gun still in hand.”

This comic takes his first steps

Life as a Southern gay man would be far less interesting if Del Shores hadn’t been around. He gave us close-to-home hilarity with Sordid Lives and Southern Baptist Sissies, but now he gives us a different kind of funny. We’ll see Shores like never before — as a stand-up comic. Easy enough because we already know he’s funny.
