Don/na Dumae celebrating 29 years of fundraising

I know the weekend is still three days away, but you can start making plans now to help Don/na Dumae (aka Don Jenkins) celebrate 29 years of fundraising Saturday night with a show at Dallas Eagle, 5740 Maple Ave.

Don/na Dumae

Line-up is at 6 p.m. (if you want to perform for a good cause, get there at 6 and talk to Don/na), and the show starts at 7 p.m. Proceeds will benefit AIDS Services of Dallas.

Don/na was Empress XXIII of the United Court of the Lone Star Empire, in 1997, and is heir apparent to the Queen Mother of the Americas.

The international court system was born in 1965 when Jose Sarria, aka The Widow Norton, declared herself Empress of San Francisco. Today more than 45 years later, the court system has more than 65 chapters in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, and is the second-largest LGBT organization in the world, according to the International Court System website.

The court in Dallas started in 1979 as The Imperial Court of Dallas, with Cindy Birdsong as Empress. The Sovereign Court of Dallas began in 1982 with Dennis Darcy as Emperor, and Sal E. Marie as Empress. But in 1986, the two courts merged to become the Imperial Court of the Lone Star Empire. Throughout its history — under all three names — the court in Dallas has been devoted to fundraising, primarily HIV/AIDS and LGBT causes.

Current beneficiaries are AIDS Interfaith Network, Youth First Texas, AIDS Services of Dallas, Resource Center Dallas’ Nutrition Center, Legacy Counseling Center and the Sharon St. Cyr Fund.

Happy Birthday, Donna Dumae!

Donna Dumae

Over the years Don Jenkins, through his drag alter ego Donna Dumae, has helped raise thousands of dollars for charitable causes — most notably HIV/AIDS services — in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.

This week, Don(na) turns 50 years old, and true to form, is using the occasion as yet another opportunity to raise money for a worthy cause.

Donna Dumae and Empress Anita Martini (who is also celebrating a birthday this week) are hosting the “Golden Oldies” fundraising show and birthday party on Sunday, June 19, at The Brick/Joe’s, 2525 Wycliff Ave. Cocktail hour starts at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m. Proceeds benefit Resource Center Dallas’ Food Pantry, which helps feed people with HIV/AIDS.

Donna and Empress Anita are also inviting performers to join in. If you are interested in strutting your stuff for charity, get there by 6 to be part of the line-up. And if performing isn’t your strong point, then bring your wallet and show your appreciation for these folks who have been doing so much for so long to help others.

Happy birthday Donna Dumae!

Donna Dumae (aka Don Jenkins)
Donna Dumae (aka Don Jenkins)

He’s been Don Jenkins all his life. But for the last 26 years, he’s also been known as Donna Dumae, a paragon of charity in the Dallas/Fort Worth LGBT community.

And every January, Donna rounds up a cast of her talented friends to host her annual birthday celebration and show to raise money for a worthy cause. This year’s birthday bash fundraiser is Sunday, Jan. 24, at Dallas Eagle. Show time is 7 p.m., and all the money raised will go to AIDS Services of Dallas.

And p.s., the Eagle will be offering some excellent drink specials, from what I hear.

So happy birthday Don “Donna Dumae” Jenkins. And thank you so much for all you do — and have done through the years — for our community!
