WATCH: Uh Huh Her at House of Blues

I was sad to not have made it out to the Uh Huh Her show this past Monday at the House of Blues — especially after talking to Camila Grey, half of the duo for last week’s ish. She and Leisha Hailey (from The L Word) came to town after a four-day stint in Austin at SXSW, but looks like they drew a decent crowd at Cambridge Room inside HOB. Just watch out for the vertigo-inducing sideways turn the video takes.

The band also debuted their new video today for their newest single “Black and Blue” on RollingStone.com, which also the title track to their current EP. Minimalistic video, but I’ve been digging the song. And who know Leisha could rock out? Watch it after the jump.

Have a heavy metal holiday with Halford at House of Blues

Judas Priest frontman Rob Halford makes one stop in Dallas

Last year, some of us (OK, one of us) were excited about Rob Halford’s eponymous-named band releasing a holiday album. Metal and Christmas? And with the lead singer from Judas Priest? It was gonna be awesome. But since then, Halford has released the album, Made for Metal, and the tour makes one stop in the whole state of Texas — and it’s here. The band stops at House of Blues tonight with Philm supporting. We’re hoping since it is December, the gay metal icon will whip out some Christmas carols as only he can. At the very least, we know he should be rocking the leather daddy look. We’re hoping anyway.

Concert Notice: Missed Lady Gaga? Check out tribute band Rad Bromance at House of Blues

Normally, we might see tribute bands for artists in heavy rotation on classic rock or oldies stations, not pop stars only into their second album. The guys of Rad Bromance took it upon themselves to turn Lady Gaga into a rock ‘n’ roll experience. And they come to town in December.

Billed as the No. 1 all-male Gaga tribute band, I kinda figure they are the only all-male Gaga tribute band. Unless you count these guys.

They play at the House of Blues’ Cambridge Room Dec. 27 at 9 p.m. Tickets “are $15,” but according to the LiveNation site, there is a $7.80 tax and fee add-on.

Check out their “Poker Face” below with its pretty brilliant opener. The rest — I’m still deciding on.

Amy Hanaialii Gilliom and Deborah Vial at HOB tonight

Vial brings a taste of Hawaii to town

Former Dallasite Deborah Vial is going to do her best to introduce local peeps to her discovery of Hawaiian music — especially that of vocalist Amy Hanaialii Gilliom. She plans to add it to the quirky Texas/Hawaii connection she’s found ever since she moving to the Aloha state.

“I can’t go to a dinner party without running into former Dallas peeps,” she says. “It’s a weird connection — particularly gay men. And all of us gay folks over here love Amy.”

After Aug. 20, maybe a few here will too.

Cyndi Lauper proved last night with her healthy two-hour set that she is willing to work hard for the money. Giving the audience both her blues side and her hits, Lauper satisfied a nicely filled room at the House of Blues. At times, she was wooden and disconnected, but mostly she gave an energetic performance, trotting across the stage and dancing erratically as we’re so used to seeing her do and reminding us that she has some pretty killer chops.

Lauper mentioned that this tour was “all about the blues,” and practically played her entire new album Memphis Blues. Her devoted fans were into her latest foray into this genre and others patiently waited it out. But she delivered the blues with nice abandon. Her voice on the album sometimes mismatched the song, but live, she does recall smoky juke joints in the backwoods South. Minus the cheering of course. With a competent band behind her, her voice traveled all over the spectrum, from beautifully stretched vocal runs to some attempted scatting. Her bluesy highlight would have to have been the ballad “Down So Low.” A slow drawl of a song with, this was her shining moment of the evening.

Cyndi Lauper still gives a damn about gays and the tint of her newest music venture

Cyndi Lauper Memphis Blues tourDallas’ summer music calendar has been hopping for LGBT audiences, from Lady Gaga and Melissa Etheridge to Adam Lambert on the horizon. Cyndi Lauper brings her tour here Wednesday. But while the others stick close to their musical genres, Lauper changes her game as often as her hair color. And this year, she’s got the blues.

Genre leaping can sometimes be the biggest misstep of a musician’s career (Garth was never the same after the Chris Gaines debacle), but Lauper has been doing it for years: Pop to dance to acoustic to standards, all without missing a beat. So she never considered her move into blues was a risk.

“I wanted to do Memphis Blues when I was still at Sony back in 2004,” she says. “As Muddy Waters quoted, ‘If blues gave birth to a child, that child would be rock and roll.’ The blues is the basis for all genres of popular music.”

Concert notice: Deborah Vial returns to Dallas with Amy Hanaialii Gilliom at HOB Aug. 20

Even though singer Deborah Vial traded in Dallas for Hawaii, she’s still a favorite in the local scene. But when she comes back to town, it’s always a homecoming kind of a big deal. Usually she can be found performing at Sue Ellen’s, but later this month, she steps on over to the House of Blues’ Cambridge Room.

Vial performs at House of Blues Aug. 20 with Hawaiian vocalist Amy Hanaialii Gilliom, who Vial assures us is a must-see. Here is Vial’s message about the upcoming show.

This is Deborah Vial and we are coming back to Dallas to play the House of Blues with Amy Hanaialii Gilliom on August 20th. Here is how it happened.

We have been watching Amy sing in the islands for years, she is truly regarded as the voice of Hawaii. She has been nominated four times for a Grammy (never won which makes her almost Susan Lucci-ish). Very gay friendly and has a large gay following. UNBELIEVABLE voice. She speaks fluent Hawaiian. Totally hot.

There is this bizarre Texas-Hawaii connection — wherever we go in Hawaii, we meet people from Texas. One night, over dinner, we suggested she come to Dallas to spread her talent around. She agreed and now we are opening for her at the Dallas House of Blues to try and introduce her to Texans. She will singing some Hawaiian, some jazz and some pop.

I received a couple of tidbits about gay musician Owen Pallett. First, he’s coming back to town in October. I’m kinda stoked that he’s coming back to perform with The National at House of Blues Oct. 9. He’s on tour supporting Heartland and played here already at the Granada back in April. You might remember that.

Second, for a limited time, he’s got music for free! If you click here, you can download his EP “Lewis Takes Off His Shirt,” the lead single from Heartland. Four remixes of the song and two mixes of other tracks from the album can be all yours. Score! Even though I got the notice today, the page itself is dated July 9 and the download is available only for a week.
