Los Lobos tonight at the Winspear

Latin legends grace Dallas

After 34 years, the iconic three-time Grammy winners, Los Lobos continues to top the charts with inventive and inspiring hit music.

Los Lobos was formed in 1974 by David Hidalgo, Conrad Lozano, Louie Prez and Cesar Rosas, four friends from Garfield High School in East Los Angeles. Though they started out as a rock-and-roll band, they soon chose a more traditional Mexican acoustic style. In time, the band adopted music from Tex-Mex, country, folk, R&B and blues, as well as the traditional Mexican songs from their roots. The band has won Grammys for its 1988 Spanish-language album, and for its contribution to the film Desperado. They have collaborated with artists such as Dave Alvin, Ruben Blades, Elvis Costello, Little Willie G, Mavis Staples, Richard Thompson, Bobby Womack and Tom Waits.

Wildly popular, talented and fun, the Los Lobos invites you to the ultimate Deiz y Seis celebration.

Alt-Disco (All Vinyl) with DJ K.L. Kemp at Fallout Lounge tonight

Dancin’ machine

DJ K. L. Kemp recently started Alt-Disco, a night at the Fallout Lounge where he spins what he calls “no bullshit old-school underground gay disco … just like they used to play at the Trocadero Transfer back in the day in San Francisco.” Someone who posts “Georgio Moroder for President” as his political view on Facebook and invites the gays to party it up like it’s 1979 sounds like a true disco devotee.

Oh, and if you didn’t catch it, he spins vinyl only. Sah-weet!

Tonight is also the DJ’s birthday, so in addition to his “electronic sleaze” and “hi-nrg funk,” he says there will also be cake. Just try not to drop crumbs while doing The Hustle.

DEETS: Fallout Lounge, 835 Exposition Ave. at 9 p.m.

White House invites Dan Choi, Robin McGehee, bloggers to DADT Repeal Act of 2010 signing ceremony

I think this is a big step for the direct action group GetEqual, whose tactics didn’t receive a lot of establishment respect. The White House, while shaken by some of the protests, clearly offered the olive branch by inviting both Lt. Dan Choi and Robin McGehee to Wednesday’s White House signing ceremony.

The signing will not be held at the White House. The invite list is apparently quite long — the ceremony is being held in an auditorium.

In case you’re wondering, your blogmistress, despite being one of the thorns in the side of the WH at times, has also received an invitation.

That’s heartening, since it also means recognition of the Netroots. Via Twitter I know that John Aravosis (certainly not a WH fan), Andy Towle, and other bloggers are invited, so perhaps the White House would like to use this opportunity to start anew. Time will tell, of course.

As far as my attendance goes, it is a life filled with an abundance of hilarious bad luck, bad timing and bad health. Usually it’s a conflict with my day job when it comes to invites of this nature; this time it’s the damn hysterectomy. YES the plumbing of the damned — it’s removed and it’s still screwing with me, lolol.

Let’s put it this way – I drove a few miles today and mailed a couple of small boxes at the PO, went to one store and came home. My abdomen is now throbbing sore and definitely feels like I overdid it (like stitches pulling). Anyway, attending would be a logistical nightmare for me. I’m not physically ready for a long drive, dealing with flying/the airport or standing for long periods yet. Also, I cannot lift more than 10 lbs for quite a while, so no bag or laptop and gear for me either. Crushing fatigue can strike without warning too. Oh, and folks have to be on site by 7AM on Wednesday. LOL. The reality is (even as I hilariously, sadly bargained with Kate about how it might be possible to go) it takes months to fully recover from a hysterectomy even without complications involving my other issues (fibromyalgia, neuropathy). The smart thing is to sadly and politely decline attending the historic event.

I do hope to see, as I watch the event on the tube on Wednesday with the rest of you, that there are many members of the military attending — those who lost their jobs due to DADT, and we can, in ceremony, close this chapter and move on to full impementation of repeal.

Cazwell Invites You To Stop By His Frozen Yogurt Truck

We know that pop artists basically write their tracks with the intention of selling them to corporations for use in their ads (or sometimes corporations themselves commission the songs ahead of time), but I never thought Cazwell's "Ice Cream Truck" — a "song for retards," as he put it, that's basically an excuse for hotties with bubble butts to gyrate for the camera – would go on to see additional success. But the NYC-based gay rapper agreed to swap out "ice cream" for "frozen yogurt" for the British treats company Snog in a new endorsement deal. Apparently Snog's fro-yo is "super healthy," but anything is gonna be good for your body when it entices you you to get down like so:

Army Invites Soldiers to Spam Them About Homosexuals

Throughout the month of September, Army personnel will have the opportunity to leave notes in an online inbox where they can share their opinions about Don't Ask Don't Tell, the federal lawmaker-approved policy that forces soldiers to keep secret whether they are dog or cat people. You can try logging on to the inbox here, but unless you've got an Army Knowledge Online login you'll probably be denied. Just like a homosexual in everyday life!

Mike Huckabee Invites You to ‘Fast + Pray’ For Sacred Prop 8

Over Labor Day Weekend in Sacramento, religious conservatives will celebrate Lou Engle's 10th Anniversary The Call prayer rally to bring attention to … something that rhymes with Stop Fate? My attention span is so zapped right now. To promote the event, folks like FRC's Tony Perkins have been asking supporters to attend. Now here comes Mike Huckabee, the man in denial about saying awful things about homosexuals, who's insisting that with "Judge Walker reversing the votes of millions of people concerning traditional marriage, this is a perfect time to gather for a solemn assembly to fast and pray and stand for the most critical issues of our day." So quick, everybody, "recommit to the lord wholeheartedly" and "cry out for mercy" so we can "turn this nation back to god as Jesus is our only hope." Also: Pray for rain!
