Al Franken asks public for help passing Student Non-Discrimination Act

Sen. Al Franken

Sen. Al Franken

Sen. Al Franken, D – Minnesota, is asking the public for help passing S. 555, The Student Non-Discrimination Act, a bill that would prohibit discrimination against public school students on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. Under the provisions of S. 555 students who experienced discrimination because of their real or perceived sexual orientation or because of their association with LGBT people could bring a civil suit against the school officials or districts responsible for the discrimination. The bill currently has 34 co-sponsors (none from Texas) and its House companion (H.R. 998 by Rep. Jared Polis, D – Colorado) has 150 (with 7 Texan co-sponsors including Houston’s own Sheila Jackson Lee and Al Green) . Both bills have been referred to committee but neither has received a hearing, a crucial step towards becoming law.

In the video requesting the public call their Senators (after the break) Franken points out that federal law already provides protection for school children harassed because of race, color, sex, religion, disability, and national origin, but that no protection exists for sexual orientation or gender identity.

The inclusion of “association” in S. 555 is particularly well thought out. According to the Williams Institute nearly 1 in 5 same-sex couples in the United States is raising children, in Harris County 18% of same-sex couples are.  As these children enter school it’s important that they be able to receive an education without harassment or bullying due to who their parents are.

Franken is asking people to call the Senate switchboard at 202-224-3121 and encourage their Senator’s to support the bill.

Red Party Foundation Kickoff Party at BJ’s

The Red Party Foundation Kick-Off Party at BJ’s NXS on April 21 raised an estimated $4,000, according to J.T. Williams, co-founder of the organization. The money will go straight to the Red Party Foundation, which was formed earlier this year as a 501(c)(3) by Williams and Jared Pearce. Last week’s fundraiser was the first of several leading up to the annual Red Party in September benefiting the Legacy Counseling Center and Founders Cottage. “I was pleasantly surprised at how well the underwear auction went,” Williams said. “James Deets and John Rieger were the big bidders, both bidding $200-plus for a pair of Candid Underwear that was worn at the time by BJ’s bartenders and dancers.” The Red Party Foundation’s website, at www.RedPartyDallas.com, is under construction by Clint Thomson of Celeratec, who is donating his services.

Jared Lee Loughner – defense by mug shot?

Is he trying for an insanity defense with this mug shot? Judy Clarke has been appointed Jared Lee Loughner’s federal public defender. She previously defended the Unabomber, Ted Kaczynski. (CNN):

Jared Lee Loughner, the suspect accused of opening fire outside an Arizona supermarket over the weekend, appeared calm and in control during his first court appearance Monday, but gave no indication as to how he would plead to the charges.

The 22-year-old faces five federal counts connected to the Saturday rampage outside a Tucson grocery store, including murder and attempted murder. Six people were killed in the attack and 14 others wounded, including U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who remains in critical condition.

Loughner wore a tan-colored prison outfit, and his head was shaved. He appeared nervous at first, according to Rowlands. Loughner looked at the ceiling and his eyes darted back and forth. His hands and feet were shackled.

Authorities have said the federal charges against Loughner include two counts of murder, two counts of attempted murder and one count of attempting to kill a member of Congress — all stemming from the shootings of federal employees at the scene. One member of Giffords’ staff was killed and two more were wounded. The gunfire also claimed the life of a federal district judge, John Roll.

Watch: YouTube Videos From Tuscon Shooter Jared Loughner

Jared   Gun
We're learning more about the alleged 22-year-old gunman who shot earlier today several people at a public event in Tuscon hosted by Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, severely injuring her and several others and taking the lives of at least two others. Jared Lee Loughner had both a Myspace page and a YouTube channel that might help bring some insight into the mind of the man.

About 15-20 shots were reported to have been fired at the Safeway where the event was taking place. A 9 mm Glock was recovered at the scene.

We know that Loughner was once a volunteer for the Tucson Festival of Books.

Loughner's Myspace page has since been taken down but not before information and screen grabs of his page were captured. Two of those photos are above. His page listed his interests as "reading, and I studied grammar. Conscience dreams were a great study in college."

Loughner Five videos were posted on Loughner's YouTube channel (username: Classitup10) in November and December of 2010. The videos are  bizarre and nonsensical. In the videos, which are simply text, graphics and music, Loughner talks about dreaming, "currency government," religion, mind control and other things, not much of which makes much sense.  He also claims this in one of the videos: "I define terrorist."

AC360: Rep. Jared Polis & LCR’s Clarke Cooper Discuss Chambliss Scandal

Tonight CNN’s Anderson Cooper discussed the “all faggots must die” comment left by a Sen. Saxby Chambliss staffer here on JMG, bringing on Rep. Jared Polis and Log Cabin head R. Clarke Cooper. (The same pair discussed the issue on MSNBC’s Hardball yesterday.) Tonight’s conversation focused more on the delay in identifying the culprit, although LCR’s Cooper once again attempted to derail the issue by launching into an attack on Obama over DADT.

UNRELATED: CNN really has a problem with my name, this is the third mention in as many weeks in which they get it wrong. Whatevs.

Terry Richardson Is Jared Leto And Vice Versa

1
Earlier this year, Jared Leto stopped by Terry Richardson's studio and let the photographer shave his locks off. The two recently reunited (sans shirts), posing as one another in these new pics. Good thing there isn't a razor in sight because not only has Leto let his hair grow back, but he's gone to all that trouble of having it frosted.

A couple of pics of Leto solo, AFTER THE JUMP.
