Himan to join Brannan for Loft set next month

About a month ago, we blogged that Texas-born Jay Brannan — whom we profiled last year — was coming back to Gilley’s Music Center (The Loft) in December. Well, now we hear who his opening act will be … and it’s none other than our friend Eric Himan. We profiled Eric, too  ealier this year, and just reviewed his new album. We’re fans of both these out artists, though sometimes if feels like Jay’s not all that fond of us, but that’s OK.

The concert is on Dec. 14.

Concert Notice: Jay Brannan returns to Dallas this December

It is my duty to report to you that gay musician Jay Brannan will be coming to Dallas this December. He returns to The Loft where he played last summer. I profiled him before that show which I thought went well. After my review of his show, it all went downhill. Brannan himself commented the following on our little ole Instant Tea blog.

based on how nasty you and your boss have been to me, i regret giving you an interview at all, especially when i really didn’t have the time, went out of my way to speak with you, and i only do a limited amount of gay press (b/c they are always so entitled and bitchy and critical as you both have been in your writing)

i assure you i will never do anything with the dallas voice again!

and i can’t believe i even gave you free tickets to the show!

Of course, that second to last line kinda burst our bubble, but still, we only want his fans to know he’s coming back. Last year’s show was a packed house. He’s set to play The Loft on Dec. 14. Doors at 7:30. Tickets are on sale right now.

Jay Brannan at The Loft last night

A sold out show at The Loft last night proved Jay Brannan has some major drawing power. Save for a Britney concert, it seemed kind of rare in Dallas to see that many gay men (and a healthy smattering of women) convened for a night of live music.  But there they were filling  the tables and then some in the small venue last night. And by the rounds of applause, Brannan gave them what they were looking for.

Which was really hard to say what that might have been.

Is Brannan something to just look at or is he someone to actually listen to? Often I overheard, “He’s so adorable,” or “How cute is he?” Brannan knows he’s cute and he uses that to his advantage during banter in between songs.  Anecdotal tales about car wrecks and an obsession with Pancho’s had many giggling like teenage schoolgirls. People gazed at him lovingly during the ballads and clapped like the end of a really good sermon. Beyond that, there wasn’t much more substance to be had.

The number one song today over at Amazon’s Top MP3 list is Jay Brannan‘s “At First Sight” which you can download for free by clicking on the pic. Although you might know him from his “Star-Spangled Banner” rendition in the movie “Shortbus” or his exquisite ballad, “Housewife,” download this as a small preview for his upcoming show on Sunday at The Loft.
