Ugandan Opposition Leader Kizza Besigye Says He Would Decriminalize Homosexuality

Kizza Besigye, who is challenging Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni for the third time in a February 18 election, says he would decriminalize homosexuality if elected.

Besigye Said Besigye: "This is something that is done in the privacy of people's rooms, between consenting adults."

AFP reports:

Besigye (sic), who noted he was speaking individually and not on behalf of the four-party opposition grouping he leads, said the so-called homosexuality issue has "generated far too much excitement" among current government leaders.

Resources the police devote to investigating homosexuality "could be better spent elsewhere," he added, during the recording of a town-hall style dialogue to be aired later on Ugandan television.

He argued his personal moral views about sexuality were not relevant.

"We are talking about the law," he said, explaining the current provisions banning homosexuality are superfluous, particularly since it has never been prosecuted.

VIRGINIA: Leader Of Anti-Gay Episcopal Sect Fired In Pornography Scandal

Episcopal Rev. Marshall Brown, who helped 14 Virginia parishes leave the main church in protest of the elevation of openly gay Bishop Gene Robinson, has been fired by his Fairfax, Virginia parish for viewing pornography on church computers. It was Brown’s Truro Church that spearheaded the continuing schism in the American Anglican Church over the ordination of gays.

Truro’s rejection of what its congregants saw as a non-biblical liberal tilt in the denomination made international news. Dozens of Episcopal churches have since joined an umbrella group of religious conservatives who oppose the acceptance of same-sex relationships and the idea that non-Christian religions have equal access to God. In 2005, Truro arranged for Brown, now 57, to get treatment for an Internet addiction after he reported having a problem, according to Bishop Martyn Minns, who was Truro’s rector at the time and is now bishop of the Convocation of Anglicans in North America, the umbrella group of breakaway churches.

The Anglican Church is currently suing Truro Church over the ownership of its properties, which are valued in the tens of millions of dollars. Nice work, Rev. Busyfingers! So which was it? Manhunt? Sean Cody?

Nicholson_sprigg

If CNN is going to keep inviting hate group leaders like Peter Sprigg of the Family Research Council on their shows, I hope they’ll continue to apply tougher questioning regarding the falsehoods that they are peddling.

Majority Leader Reid explains how the Senate is going to move forward

I used C-SPAN’s video tool to embed this video of Majority Leader Reid announcing plans for moving forward. C-SPAN let’s one clip only the relevant video one wants.

The Senate wants to adjourn on December 17th. That’s less than two weeks from now. And, they’ve got a lot to do. He addressed the Defense bill after prompting from Senator Levin. Transcript of those remarks is below. Bottom line is that time is still our enemy and we’ll need to see a lot of cooperation if the DADT language is going to pass this year.

You have to click on the start button (black triangle) to begin the video.

Here’s the language, from the transcipt on Defense Authorization:

AND THE OTHER THING THAT I’VE INDICATED — IN FACT I HAD A NUMBER OF CONVERSATIONS, BIPARTISAN IN NATURE, YESTERDAY — WE’RE ALSO TRYING TO FIGURE OUT A TIME TO MOVE FORWARD ON THE DEFENSE AUTHORIZATION BILL. THE ISSUE ON THAT, MADAM PRESIDENT, IS WHAT WE DO WITH AMENDMENTS. AND WITHOUT BELABORING THE POINT HERE, I WOULD BE HAPPY TO CONSIDER DOING A NUMBER OF AMENDMENTS, IF WE HAVE TIME AGREEMENTS ON THOSE AMENDMENTS. BUT JUST TO HAVE AN OPEN PROCESS, AT THIS STAGE, I DON’T SEE HOW WE CAN DO THAT. BUT I WILL CONTINUE TO WORK WITH MY FRIEND, THE CHAIRMAN OF THE COMMITTEE, AND OTHERS INTERESTED, BOTH REPUBLICANS AND DEMOCRATS, RECOGNIZING HOW IMPORTANT THAT LEGISLATION IS.

Watch: Hate Group Leader Tony Perkins Spews ‘DADT’ Nonsense on MSNBC

Msnbc_perkins

Hate group leader Tony Perkins (of the Family Research Council) and Sgt. Brian Fricke of the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, appeared on MSNBC today to discuss 'DADT' repeal and the Pentagon report.

Perkins does his best to discredit the opinions of Mullen and Gates, and cites the FRC's own "scientific survey" (The survey of a designated hate group) that 30% of the Armed Forces are ready to leave if gays are allowed to serve openly.

Former GOP House Majority Leader Tom Delay Found Guilty Of Money Laundering

Former Republican House majority leader and one-time Dancing With The Stars contestant Tom Delay has been convicted of multiple counts of money laundering. Delay was found guilty of funneling almost 0,000 to the campaigns of GOP House and Senate candidates.

“I still maintain that I am innocent,” DeLay told reporters. “The criminalization of politics undermines our very system. I’m very disappointed.” Travis County District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg said the verdict showed no one was above the law. “This case is a message from the citizens of the state of Texas that the public officials they elect to represent them must do so honestly and ethically, and if not they’ll be held accountable,” Lehmberg said. DeLay’s sentencing was set for December 20, and he faces a possible maximum prison term of 99 years on the money laundering charge and 20 years on the conspiracy charge. Two other men facing charges in the case are awaiting trial. DeLay, a conservative Republican, helped Newt Gingrich spearhead the GOP revival in 1994 that won control of the House and Senate in the first midterm election under Democratic President Bill Clinton.

In 2006 Delay resigned from the House in the face of the scandal.

Iowa GOP Senate Leader: Four Remaining Judges Will be Removed Unless the People Get to Vote on Gay Marriage

Following the recent successful right-wing campaign to oust three pro-equality Iowa Supreme Court judges in the recent election, reelected Senate Republican Leader Paul McKinley is threatening to take out the remaining four judges who approved marriage equality unless Iowans are allowed to vote on an amendment banning same-sex marriage.

The Iowa Supreme Court approved marriage equality in a 7-0 vote in April 2009.

Said McKinley to Radio Iowa: Mckinley

“That is an issue that the people overwhelmingly said, ‘We want to have a say in this. It should not be overreaching government or judges. I believe the (justices) would still be in office had Mike Gronstal allowed that vote over the past two years. It would not even have been an issue…You can lay that squarely at the feet of the Democrats. And I don’t know if they want to be responsible for a redo of this in two years on a (judicial) retention vote or not, but I would think that many of their members who have professed that they think people should have a vote will be given the opportunity to do the right thing."

Iowa Senate Democrat Majority Leader Gronstal recently vowed to block any attempts to bring a marriage amendment to a vote.

Democrats will retain a 26-24 edge in the Iowa Senate, while Republicans are taking the House. House Republican Leader Kraig Paulsen intends to bring a marriage amendment to the floor.

Still, the process to push any ballot measure through is tough, Radio Iowa adds: "A resolution must be passed by both the Iowa House and Senate in 2011 or 2012 and then again in 2013 or 2014 before an amendment could be placed on the General Election ballot."

HRC Meets with New York Senate Majority Conference Leader

HRC's National Field Director Marty Rouse joins Greater NY Steering Committee member Pete Webb and Senate Majority Conference Leader John Sampson.

The future of marriage equality in New York may rest on the results of next week’s Gubernatorial and state Senate elections.

Earlier this week I met with Senate Majority Conference Leader John Sampson to discuss some of the key state Senate races.  There are a half dozen top tier races all over the state that are still way too close to call.

We have organizers working in all of them and a few others, and we have dozens of volunteers working at our phone banks in Manhattan and on Long Island.

If you care about marriage equality and if you can spare some time these next few days in New York (or if you know of someone who can), please contact david.turley@hrc.org.

From Buffalo to Brookhaven, from Rockland County to Queens, your voice is needed. Please join us as we seek to make history in New York.
