Do you Peru?

Even as fans rallied to help Coco Peru get her next film off the ground, the drag goddess still likes her comedy live

Expect a lovefest when Coco Peru comes back to Dallas for Pride weekend. With memories of a responsive audience, shopping and beef jerky during her last go-round here nearly two years ago, the drag goddess is hoping for a repeat performance. Sort of. She’s back on the road with a new show, but that’s not all the legendary queen has going on.

“Well, we’ve filmed Girls Will Be Girls 2 already,” Peru (aka Clinton Leupp) says. “Right now the writer/director is busily editing. It’s just one of those things: You film it and hope for the best.”

Peru has garnered a significant amount of film work over the years, usually with notable cameos in films like as Trick, but occasionally as the star, as with Girls Will Be Girls. But she admits live performance is where she’s at her best.

“I like to think my show is like watching a theater piece,” she says. “I love film acting, but it’s exciting on a whole other level. There’s not that energy of a live audience and no feedback. So often, comic timing is how the audience is reacting to you. With acting, you mentally feel it out, try it and mostly trust the director. I find sometimes I rehearsed a line so much in my head, it takes me a few times to take direction on it.”

For Girls 2, Peru discovered just how much her fans appreciated her work. As a micro-mini indie, the film went on the website Kickstarter to raise funds. As word got out that the film was in production and that Peru was in it, the money rolled in.

“The movie was completely funded by fans,” she exclaims. “It was just incredible that they would want to pay money! And I must say, most of it came from my fans. I’m just putting that out there.”

Along with funds from Kickstarter, the crew itself was almost all-volunteer. People would just show up, willing to help out. It turned into an actual labor of love.

Along with donated help, the production even received a donated green screen. All the generosity reminded Peru that people are that genuinely kind and that it’s all right to ask for things, which usually embarrasses her. She saw this particular filmmaking experience as a good lesson on many levels.

“Let’s just hope the movie’s funny,” she laughs.

Dating back to the “early ‘90s” — that’s as specific as her website will get — Peru gives much credit to her fans along the way for the success of her career. Even if they come up to once again mention her role in the film Trick, Peru takes none of it for granted. Perhaps it’s cliché for any type of celebrity to appreciate their fans, but she  talks at length about how her fans have kept her driven.

“It’s so overwhelming, whether it’s a movie or my own shows, that they will take time to contact me to tell me whatever it is they are feeling,” she says. “I feel lucky and blessed when they reach out to me and I strive to answer every email. I remember those days that felt so lonely and sad. Growing up gay and feeling rejected doesn’t make a happy life. But when you get over 800 birthday messages on Facebook, it’s amazing!”

She’ll meet a new slew of fans on her current End of Summer Tour, as she’ll visit Tampa and Las Vegas for the first time as a performer. Even with her experience onstage, Peru is still daunted by a new audience, the same way she was before playing Dallas the first time early last year.

“The first time, I was nervous and I didn’t know what to expect,” she recalls. “I felt that audiences came wanting to have a great time. You go to certain cities and they have a bit of an edge, but in Texas, it was an immediate love fest on both ends.”

In her new show, There Comes a Time, Peru talks about getting older and reminiscing about her life. Fortunately, Dallas isn’t a punch line in her monologue. The city left a good impression on her and she only hopes to make another one of her own.

“Well, I’m happy to be coming back and they took such good care of me last time,” she says, “but I don’t wanna jinx myself. You never know.”

Signorile: Celebrate ‘DADT’ Repeal, but Heed the Lesson

Signorile

Radio host Michelangelo Signorile discussed Obama's victory on 'DADT' repeal this week, and why a lot of other folks deserve the credit too.

Writes Signorile on his blog:

"In the end, through a series of fateful events — from Harry Reid pulling the government spending bill, clearing the schedule, to Senators Lieberman and Collins creating a stand-alone bill — "don't ask, don't tell" repeal passed. In addition to fate and timing, it was because DADT repeal took on a life of it's own thanks to activists' relentless pressure, disrupting the president's events, protesting Congressional leaders. It's not a coincidence that other promises made by the president, where there was much less pressure from the left early on, didn't pan out. And that's the lesson of the DADT repeal saga for the LGBT movement and for all progressives."

Mike Signorile on heeding the lesson of the path traveled to DADT repeal

Michelangelo Signorile has a good clip up from his show, “Celebrate DADT Repeal, But Heed the Lesson,” where a listener from Oklahoma made the argument that Obama’s original plan (repeal of DADT via Congress) was what he wanted and eventually what was accomplished, despite calls from certain quarters for him not to appeal the ruling of Circuit Court Judge Virginia Phillips. Mike:

I took the opportunity to discuss why, though this is a big victory for the President, it only happened because of those activists — including grass roots activists and bloggers – putting the pressure on (I’ve posted a video from the segment below). Even Senate Armed Service Committee Chairman Senator Levin, just a week before the vote, was pointing to the president’s foot-dragging, about which the Human Rights Campaign, throughout the year, was refusing to criticize the White House.

In the end, through a series of fateful events — from Harry Reid pulling the government spending bill, clearing the schedule, to Senators Lieberman and Collins creating a stand-alone bill — “don’t ask, don’t tell” passed. In addition to fate and timing, it was because DADT repeal took on a life of it’s own thanks to activists’ relentless pressure, disrupting the president’s events, protesting Congressional leaders. It’s not a coincidence that other promises made by the president, where there was much less pressure from the left early on, didn’t pan out. And that’s the lesson of the DADT repeal saga for the LGBT movement and for all progressives.

While things worked out positively (thank you Mr. President), it’s quite interesting that the revisionist history is already being created, where activists “hated” the President, criticizing the administration’s every move and that somehow bloggers were obstructionists. That sounds more like apologist mewling rather than actually reading the archives to see that the call was for the President that the promises the President made, along with his repeated statements to hold him accountable, was all that was going on.

Now admittedly, there was way more rancor here in the comments than in any posts I wrote on DADT, but usually those get conflated with my own opinions on things. Yeah, we were all very tough on the administration, but was there any time where I said he 1) needed to lose in 2012 or 2) needed a primary challenger? No. The fact is I simply wanted promises made to be kept. The Cheetos-PJ wearing crowd pointed out the strategy flops, the foot-dragging and the very real contentious, even combative nature of Press Secretary Robert Gibbs any time a DADT question was asked. Bloggers didn’t make that up.

The lesson of segregation is — further civil discrimination?!

Historically, the evangelical voice was a prominent one in promoting/providing cover for segregation:

And even when resistance thankfully began to drop, it was still Scripture that often provided the biggest sticking point:

A “struggle” that endured in some churches for years thereafter (some even to this day):

So when we hear a modern Southern Baptist (and African-American) voice applying God’s supposed lessons in this way…

God calls homosexuality an abomination. It is just as sinful as segregation

-The Southern Baptist Convention’s Craig Vincent Mitchell [SOURCE]

…we can’t help but get a little annoyed. Because while we know that society always learns the right course – Eventually. Inevitably — it’s a shame that the seeming thirst for a minority target keeps leading some to twist and mold the Bible into the kind of civil rights weaponry that most conveniently befits a particular generation’s whims. History has taught us better than that.

A Bible lesson gone horribly wrong

Some of the things that land in my inbox are from seriously disturbed people. I wasn’t the only one on the distro list for this batsh*ttery, but I had to share it with you.

I am warning you, this one starts off nutty and goes downhill fast. It’s below the fold.

God created the heavens and earth and all the animals. And he created a garden of eden from which he created man from the dust. He called this man Adam. After a while God saw that Adam was lonely.

So he caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam and while Adam slept God opened Adam’s side and took one of his ribs and created a woman to be a companion for Adam. This woman was called Eve. Eve was bone of Adam’s bone and flesh of Adam’s flesh. God created Eve as a soulmate and companion for Adam. When God created Adam and Eve they had no knowledge of evil. They only had the goodness of God. God did not give Adam and Eve the knowledge of evil or the power to have sex and create. All God wanted was Adam and Eve in the garden of eden and  the animals on the earth. Adam and Eve would never destroy  the garden of eden and the animals would never destroy the earth.

That’s why God created the garden of eden. That was Adam and Eve’s home for eternity. Lucifer was one of God’s angels. God called Lucifer the morning star. He rose up in evil against God and God drove him from heaven. In order to get back at God, Lucifer came down to the garden of eden and put the evil in the tree of knowledge of good. Then it became the tree of knowledge of good and evil. God saw the evil and warned Adam and Eve not to touch it or eat from it or they would surely die. Then God went away and while he was gone Lucifer tried to get Eve to eat from the tree. Eve told Lucifer that they would surely die. Lucifer lied and said that they would live forever. He told them that he would make them into Gods. Eve fell for Lucifer’s lies and she did eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

Then she got Adam to eat from it. When they did their eyes were opened and they saw that they were naked. That’s when they gained the knowledge and the power to have sex and create. They covered themselves up with fig leaves and ran and hid from God. God found them and condemed them both. God drove them from the garden of eden never to return. Then God punished Lucifer by turning him into a snake to eat the dust of the other animals for eternity. Adam and Eve still had a choice. They could have gone with the goodness of God and not had sex or they could go with the evil and the power that Lucifer gave them. They chose the evil and the power that Lucifer gave them. Then they started lying and said it was God’s way. But it wasn’t God’s way it was Lucifer’s way of worse than worse than incest. When Adam had sex with Eve he was having sex with his own flesh. Eve was bone of his bone and flesh of his flesh.

Now I am going to explain what I mean by worse than worse than incest. If Adam came from the dust and Eve came from the dust there would be no incest between them. And what ever they created would be a true son and a true daughter. When the true son and true daughter had sex to keep the population going that would have been incest. And what ever they created would have been closer flesh. A true brother and sister committing incest cannot create a son or daughter. They create closer flesh because the flesh is closer than they were to begin with. So that way would have been incest and closer flesh. If Adam came from the dust and Eve came from the dust and they had true sons and daughters and Adam had sex with his daughters and Eve had sex with her sons to keep the population going that would have been worse than incest and they would have created closer than closer flesh. The closer the flesh the worse the incest.

The way it happened was that Adam had sex with his own flesh. So that was worse than worse than incest and they created closer than closer than closer flesh. So when you marry someone you are marrying someone that is 3 times closer than a true brother and sister. That’s why people create birthdefects and deformaties.

We are all birthdefects because we all have the knowledge of evil. We all came from worse than worse than incest and we are still the same. There is no such thing as grand ma and grand pa or mother and father or sister and brother or uncle and aunt or nephew and niece or any other name. It was made up by Adam and Eve and their generations. We are simply Adam’s flesh having sex with Adam’s flesh and what ever you create is Adam’s flesh. Jesus came from Mary having sex with another man while Joseph was off fighting in a war. Jesus grew up and found out the truth from the priests who didn’t get married and have sex.

But the priests were afraid to tell everyone because they were afraid they would be killed. So Jesus found 12 other men and he told them the truth. And with their help he tried to tell everyone that in the eyes of God they were all brothers and sisters and that they were committing incest by getting married and having sex. They all got upset and angry and crucified him. Jesus went back to the dust just like everyone before him and after him. Just where God told Adam and Eve they would go.

From dust you came and dust you shall return. Jesus was a 33 year old virgin who gave his life trying to keep the generations from being born from sin into a sinful world.

Long before Jesus was born there were thousands of slaves that ran off around the world and started their own countries. When these slaves ran off there was a large group of men that took off and ended up in Africa. Some of them were giants as tall as 9 ft. or even  taller. The giant named Goliath that David killed with his slingshot was 9 ft. tall.

Some of these men went exploring to Borneo and used ropes to catch female orangutans and took them to South America and had sex with them and eventually created the Indians. The men that stayed in Africa used ropes to catch female gorillas and had sex with them and eventually created the Africans. When scientists found the bones in Africa they thought we evolved naturally from a female chimpanzee.

But it wasn’t a natural evolution it was a man made evolution. That’s where Bigfoot and the Orangutan creatures come from. They are half man and half gorilla and half man and half orangutan. They use to call the Indians the red man. The orangutan has reddish hair.

When those men bred out the hair the Indian’s skin remained red. The gorilla has black hair and skin. When those men bred out the hair the African’s skin remained black. Some of the Indians and Africans are tall. And some of the Bigfoot and Orangutan creatures are tall. They are tall because some of the men that created them were tall.

Bigfoot migrated up through Africa and came into the United States at the top of Africa when they were connected by land. The Orangutan creatures migrated up through Central America and came into the United States like the Indians did later on.

The first Europeans that saw the Africans said that some of the African women had genitals that resembled that of a gorilla. If you look at the nose of an African you will notice that it is wide like the gorilla’s nose. We are worse than worse than incest and worse than worse than bestiality.

Target’s Anti-Gay Political Donations Are Not Actually New: A History Lesson

Crawling back into the sunlight after a the publicity nightmare it created for itself, Target and CEO Gregg Steinhafel now say the company is "genuinely sorry" for donating 0,000 in cash and services to the political action committee MN Forward. Steinhafel also told employees (and, by proxy, consumers) today, "We remain fully committed to fostering an environment that supports and respects the rights and beliefs of all individuals. " But how can Target remain fully committed to something it never had in the first place?
