Another reason why ‘Drag Race’ is the best reality show on TV

Posted on 05 Feb 2013 at 4:32pm

RPDRS5_Monica-Beverly-Hillz-WHTI’ve repeatedly said that RuPaul’s Drag Race is my favorite reality show, hands down. And last night’s episode is a good example of why.

First, the main challenge involved this season’s queens lip-synching to the catfights by queens on previous seasons of the series. Watching them “perform” as other drag divas was, alone, hysterical.

Next, this week’s guest judges included Kristen Johnson and Juliette Lewis, both clearly long-standing fans of the series (they knew exactly who the contestants were mimicking). And, when last week’s bottom 2 survivor Serena Chacha was kicked off, well, let’s just say the right decision was made.

But this is why the show is something more: When contestant Monica Beverly Hillz, pictured, was criticized by the judges for not seeming to have her head in the game, she broke down. “I have a secret,” she tearfully confessed. She is not, she realized, just a female impersonator: She is, in fact, a transgender woman. Such an acknowledgment on any other show would be met with confused stares and awkward silences; on Drag Race, though, it becomes a moment of community. Other queens expressed support and pride in Monica; Johnson and Lewis — using correct pronouns — offered kind words.

Often, LGBT people on TV are portrayed for comic relief, or as oddballs deserving of mockery. Drag Race has fun, with campy jokes and silly challenges, but it has a heart and treats everyone with respect. That says something.

Dallas A-Lister James Doyle talks getting cupped for the right reasons

Photos by Eric Dickson courtesy James Doyle.

You’ve likely seen James Doyle’s latest photo buzzing around the Facebooks and Interwebs. If not, then you can after the jump. But he seems to be on the cusp of a reinvention after gay America saw him unravel on the first (and last) season of Logo’s A-List: Dallas. We saw him go from socialite to hot mess over the course of the season as friends tried to tell him it gets better.

Perhaps it has.

In an email to us (and other outlets like Queerty), he says this latest photo is his statement on his stance for equality and if he needs to be bold, then so be it.

“I am just trying to get my name out there after the show for the causes and the things I believe in, whether that means being bold, doing it on my own, or being risky,” he wrote.

Doyle spoke with me this morning about his latest intentions and that really, his work from here on out is going to be an uphill battle. Call it a reinvention, but for him,  it’s more like damage control after his personal life started taking a nosedive right before filming and then played out through the season.

Dan Savage gets better again on MTV

MTV and Logo have announced that Dan Savage, co-creator of the It’s Get Better Project with his partner Terry Miller, both pictured, will host a second special to air this fall. The new special, like the first, will share stories and experiences of young people growing up LGBT. The first one aired in February; it will receive an encore showing on June 23 on MTV, as well as several more screenings on Logo during the coming weeks. For more information, you can visit ItGetsBetter.org.

MTV airs the season finale of Savage U — a series where Savage and a cohort cross the country speaking at colleges — tonight at 10:30 p.m. The setting? Texas Tech. You can see a preview at MTV.com. Logo aired the season premiere of RuPaul’s Drag U last night.

Well, at least Levi Crocker is saying no second season of “A-List: Dallas”

Much to the chagrin of many, there are signs that there will be no second season of A-List: Dallas. OK, only the one post from the show’s Levi Crocker. Today, he posted the following on his Facebook:

I sent out quick messages on Twitter and an email to Logo and a couple of Crocker’s castmates for any confirmation. Whether Crocker jumped the gun on making any comment is uncertain but a direct tweet from Shawn at @LogoTV only told me that they “actually have no news at this moment. Hang tight!”

Personally, I’d be kinda bummed if it was off the air. I liked AL:D a lot despite complaints that it perpetuated gay and Dallas and gay Dallas stereotypes. Hey, stereotypes are entertaining and even if it seemed pretty stagey in some parts, AL:D had all the makings of a dramatic nighttime soap opera. For me, put A-List: Dallas right up there with Dynasty and Melrose Place for dishy drama and pool fights.

Plus, I would really miss Hunter Hauk’s recaps over on the DO site. Those are something to be truly appreciated.

And the REAL winner is…

SPOILER ALERT!!!!

Last night we learned the real reason Willam was kicked off RuPaul’s Drag Race (unauthorized conjugal visits with his partner during filming), and also which queen was the winner of this season. And it went to …

Sharon Needles!

The scary diva broke with the tradition of glamourpuss winners by being the first shock drag winner. Congrats! It was just nice to see Phi Phi lose. Who’s with me?

And the ‘Drag Race’ winner is…

… Well, we don’t know yet. But in a RuPaul’s Drag Race first, last week all three finalists — PhiPhi O’Hara, Sharon Needles and Chad Michaels — lip-synched for their lives, only to be told the winner would be announced this week. And further complicating matters, Ru sent the call out to the viewers and the blogosphere that she would take suggestions on who deserved it most, with posts via Facebook.

A quick look at the Drag Race Facebook page shows Phi Phi seems to be the one most viewers want to “sashay away,” but who’s to say if that will happen? I’m pulling for Sharon — something former finalist Manila Luzon basically agreed with in a story last week — but what do y’all think? Who do you wanna see win tonight?

“Drag Race” back for Season 5, seeks auditions

Despite officially abandoning gay programming, Logo at least knows one thing its audience enjoys: Drag queens in a weekly bitch-off. Logo has given the greenlight to a fifth season of RuPaul’s Drag Race which will begin airing, as has been the custom, in early 2013. (It will presumably follow the all-stars edition previously announced.)

More than that, though, the show is seeking audition videos from hopeful dragtestants. Queens wanting to be considered for the show can upload video from now until April 18. Then from the 18th through May 2, fans can weigh in on which queen they prefer, and the winner will be added to the cast.

To learn more, visit LogoTv.com.

LISTEN: Solomon covers Robyn’s “Dancing On My Own” and offers as free download

Openly gay singer Solomon released what he described on his website as “By far my favorite song of 2010. That summer for me was fantastic and “Dancing On My Own” was definitely the soundtrack to that very memorable summer. It even inspired me to write “Dancing All Alone,” which I incorporated in this cover song.” He is offering the song as a free download on the site. Solomon’s last outing was the 2011 EP release The Love Rocker Project which garnered him play video play on Logo for the song “Wit Us U Can’t…”

Without straying from the original beat, Solomon added his rapping skills to the track along with his breathy vocals and churned out a respectable cover. And he even managed to work his own flair into the track.

If you don’t wanna download just yet, just listen to the track after the jump.

Local comic Jerry Calumn joins GayBingo cast

As part of GayBingo’s upgrade, the monthly Resource Center Dallas event has added to its cast of regulars. An announcement by the RCD on Saturday said that it is introducing a new component to the line-up of entertainment, adding comic Jerry Calumn to the cast starting March 17 in the Granite Bar.

Calumn has the cred to back him up, too. In RCD’s announcement, his resume includes performances at the Hollywood Improv and Comedy Store on Sunset as well as producing the Outlaugh Comedy Festival (the first LGBT comedy festival in the U.S.) and the Logo TV series Outlaugh Festival on Wisecrack, hosted by Margaret Cho. Calumn has his serious side, too — he’s the event manager for Lone Star Ride Fighting AIDS.

The GayBingo theme this week is Beach Getaway Who Done It? and games start Saturday at 6 p.m. For more information or to buy tickets, click here.

Shocking news: Logo abandons gay programming

Posted on 01 Mar 2012 at 1:58pm
Tweet

Both Huffington Post and Queerty are reporting that Logo has made a huge decision: To abandon the mission to program “gay TV.”

According to the reports, the attempt to get gays and their haggish friends watch a network just because gay people were on it didn’t work. The evidence: The A-List: New York netted about 150,000 viewers per ep; Bravo’s Real Housewives averages about 4 million. Apparently, the lesson was: Gays won’t tune into awful, cliche-ridden, badly produced reality shows just because they feature gay stereotypes.

Uh-huh.

This is, to me, ridiculous news. What Logo is basically doing is blaming its audience — “gays should want to watch other gays, but they won’t,” seems to be the message. It has nothing to do with, say, the programming being terrible.

Logo, to me, has always struggled to produce quality shows targeted to gay viewers. I don’t mind 1 Girl, 5 Gays … except that it’s shot in Canada and airs first on MTV. Imagine, gay Texans not caring about a bunch of Canucks offering their opinions on Avril Lavigne and what they did in “grade 8!” Surprise! Hey, maybe if you did the same show with Americans, gaymericans would watch.

True, Real Housewives has taken some critical drubbings; on the other hand, not all have been successful (when’s the last time you saw an original RH: Miami or RH: D.C.?).  And let’s face it: The quality on many of the Logo shows is not great. The one about the gay guy who shoots Angelenos full of Botox? Ugh. Who could stomach such nonsense? And the movies they air tend to be older, heavily edited (to remove offensive content… you know, like gay stuff) and irrelevant, not to mention overladen with ads. Plus, the network itself is horribly managed: Shows are pulled or start late all the time, so you set your DVR and miss that last five minutes… or see the ending of the movie you were about to rent.

Please, Logo, stop blaming the gays for your network not working. You used to cover some news (with a straight guy who was pretty but with the personality of a pencil in brief segments ), but don’t do anything serious; I love RuPaul’s shows, but that can’t be the only thing on your network.

So consider this: Program better TV. Schedule better shows. Pick better movies. Hire smarter (gayer?) producers. Don’t assume all gay people are — or want to watch — bitchy 20something queeny boys who would sooner so take meth than mention politics intelligently. You make better shows, I guarantee you, we’ll tune in.

Well, not now. Abandon us, will ya? Just wait to see how quickly we abandon you.
