Life is a … oh, you know it
This doesn’t look like your usual Liza version. The Dallas Theater Center stages the Kander and Ebb musical Cabaret, and by the looks of their ad campaign, it’s going to be sizzling. Sure Sally Bowles is the central character, but weren’t you always intrigued by the mysterious master of ceremonies? We’re even more so now.

DEETS: Wyly Theatre, 2400 Flora St. Through May 22. $10–$80. DallasTheaterCenter.org.

La vida out and proud
Not only did Ricky Martin come out in one of the most eloquent ways ever, he took to using his celebrity in advocating for LGBT rights. That only made him sexier than he already is. As if he needed to add to his hotness, he’s been baring a whole lot more skin lately — and we likey.

DEETS: Verizon Theatre, 1001 Performance Place., Grand Prairie  8 p.m. $40–$126.
Ticketmaster.com.

Street art a different way
Before celebrating Easter in the Park, check-in to the Cedar Springs Art Festival. Local art, food booths and snowcones make this a must. Plus, it’s probably the only art fest with dance music.

DEETS: Cedar Springs Road and Throckmorton Street. 10 a.m. Free. ShopCedarSprings.com.

Bryan + Jay Leffew: This Is What (Many) Happy Valentine’s Days Looks Like

We've been following the Leffew Family for almost two years now. (See our first post from May 2009.) We didn't ask Jay and Bryan at the time, but we adopted them — with their two adopted kids, Selena and Daniel — as our unofficial Queety family mascots. Which is why it's so lovely to see them add to their previous holiday videos with this Valentine's Day special. Now tune in as you watch a young romance blossom into marriage (yes, a legal pre-Prop 8 one), parenthood, and what so many of us are striving for: unconditional love. Many more Happy Valentine's Days to you all.

Gay Love Looks Just Like Straight Love (Inside Your Brain)

It doesn't matter if you're a straight gal looking at your wedding photos or a gay man Skypeing with your partner: the areas of the brain that "light up" when people see their romantic partners are the exact same whether you're a man or woman, or straight or gay, report University College London researchers. Activity in the cortical and sub-cortical regions — basically your brain's happy centers, rich with dopamine — was examined using functional magnetic resonance imaging scans (i.e. fancy brain scans), and found that while "some brain regions showed increased activity when lovers viewed images of romantic partners, others shut down, such as parts of the temporal, parietal, and frontal cortex, which are thought to be important in judgment. That finding lends credence to the adage that 'love is blind,'" says Semir Zeki, a professor at the school's Wellcome Trust Center for Neuroimaging.

Watch: ‘In The Life’ Looks at Samuel Steward

Steward

I've mentioned the book Secret Historian here before. Cable show In The Life took a closer look at the book and its author, Justin Spring. They write:

"A self-invented legend, Samuel Steward lived as an out gay man decades before the 1969 Stonewall Rebellion. Sam's far-reaching impact includes detailed journals and recordkeeping which were invaluable to the studies of Alfred Kinsey and artistry that inspired famed designer Ed Hardy."

‘Dilemma’ looks for solution

Screen Shot 2010-10-08 At 2.00.19 PmDue largely to complaints from one Anderson Cooper, Universal Pictures has pulled a trailer for the upcoming flick The Dilemma wherein star Vince Vaughn referred to electric cars as “gay.” This from TMZ:

Bowing to growing outrage from the likes of Anderson Cooper, Universal Pictures has decided to pull the trailer for the movie “The Dilemma” — and replace it with a new one some time today … Universal tells TMZ

Universal Pulls ‘Gay’ Movie Trailer [TMZ]

Don’t underestimate the power of the Coop. He smacks down crazy blog rants, lands a deal to become the new Oprah, and allows electric cars to come out on their own time. It’s the magical grey hair.

And besides, everyone knows the electric car is far more interested in what its tail pipe emits, not what it does or does not admit.

**UPDATE: Nikki Finke at Deadline Hollywood says, “Universal has now told me twice this morning that it sent an advance copy of its The Dilemma trailer to the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation for vetting and the organization didn’t object to it.” GLAAD, however, says:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Universal Announces Removal of Offensive Joke from Film Trailer

October 08, 2010, Los Angeles, CA – Last month Universal shared a link to the trailer for the film ‘The Dilemma’ with GLAAD. After reviewing, GLAAD called on Universal to remove the scene where the word ‘gay’ was used as a pejorative from the trailer. Today, after Anderson Cooper also spoke out against the scene, Universal confirmed to GLAAD that the offensive joke will be removed from promotional campaigns from this point forward, including in the trailer currently playing in movie theatres.

“The use of the word ‘gay’ in this trailer as a slur is unnecessary and does nothing more than send a message of intolerance about our community to viewers,” said GLAAD President Jarrett Barrios.

Just off the wires:

TACOMA, Wash. — A federal judge says the Air Force violated the constitutional rights of a highly decorated flight nurse when it discharged her for being gay, and ordered that she be given her job back as soon as possible.

Looks like ‘Faggots must die’ comment at Joe.My.God came from office of Sen. Chambliss (R-GA)

Wow. This is so disturbing. But, why should anyone be surprised that an anti-gay slur came from the office of GOP Senator when GOP Senators spent the day trashing gays and lesbians. Actually, the GOPers were trashing gay and lesbian servicemembers.

From Joe, who has the initial details and this update:

I’ve just gotten off the phone with Atlanta Journal-Constitution political writer Jim Galloway who says that Sen. Saxby Chambliss has confirmed that the “All faggots must die” comment left here on JMG earlier today did indeed come from his Atlanta office. Galloway reports that Chambliss told him his office is conducting an internal investigation.

Joe added, “The AJC’s Galloway cautions that Chambliss is not taking responsibility yet.” Wonder if they ever will.
