What’s Shakin’ – Siriano at Galleria, Voter turnout continues to lag

Christian Siriano

Christian Siriano

1. As previously reported by Houstini, Project Runway Season 5 winner Christian Siriano’s coming to the Houston Galleria Payless Shoe store today to show off his expanded Payless collection, including an assortment of shoes and handbags. Siriano will be available for photos with his “fierce” -ly loyal fans. The posing and pouting kick off at 5 pm at the Galleria, 5061 Westheimer Road.

2. Voter turnout continues to be paltry. So far 40,189 people have voted, only 71% of the 55,152 who had voted by this point during the 2009 municipal elections.  Early voting continues through November 4.  Election day is Nov 8. A list of all early voting locations and sample ballots  are available at harrisvotes.org.

3. Yesterday Rep. Todd Akin, R – MO, who successfully introduced an amendment to the House version of the National Defense Authorization Act earlier this year which would prohibit same-sex marriages from being performed on U.S. military bases, delivered a letter to the Senate calling on them to pass similar legislation.  The letter was signed by 86 members of the 435 member House, including 7 Texans, all Republicans: Mike Conaway, Francisco Canseco, Louie Gohmert, Ralph Hall, Sam Johnson, Michael McCaul and Randy Nuegebauer.

Los Lobos tonight at the Winspear

Latin legends grace Dallas

After 34 years, the iconic three-time Grammy winners, Los Lobos continues to top the charts with inventive and inspiring hit music.

Los Lobos was formed in 1974 by David Hidalgo, Conrad Lozano, Louie Prez and Cesar Rosas, four friends from Garfield High School in East Los Angeles. Though they started out as a rock-and-roll band, they soon chose a more traditional Mexican acoustic style. In time, the band adopted music from Tex-Mex, country, folk, R&B and blues, as well as the traditional Mexican songs from their roots. The band has won Grammys for its 1988 Spanish-language album, and for its contribution to the film Desperado. They have collaborated with artists such as Dave Alvin, Ruben Blades, Elvis Costello, Little Willie G, Mavis Staples, Richard Thompson, Bobby Womack and Tom Waits.

Wildly popular, talented and fun, the Los Lobos invites you to the ultimate Deiz y Seis celebration.

Texas Rep. Louie Gohmert shares his homoerotic fantasies

Via LezGetReal, the latest bigot eruption by one of the more homo-obsessive elected officials out there, Rep Louie Gohmert (R-TX), who represents the 1st district in the Lone Star State. I feel sorry for his constituents, because Gohmert clearly couldn’t have been elected to focus on male homosexuality.

“I know when I was in the army at Fort Benning and a young man there in the barracks could not control his overt feelings of homosexuality, and so he misread indications from another person in the barracks and found out that he had misread when he crawled into his bunk with him late one night, and his advances were not met with the kind of affection that he had hoped. That’s not good for the good order and discipline. When we had people who cannot control their hormones no matter whether it’s heterosexual, homosexual, whatever. They’re an impediment to the military.”

You know, usually men who are this obsessed about male homosexuality end up getting caught in men’s bathrooms like Larry Craig did. In fact, many of them seem to be really upset because the legitimization of homosexuality has resulted in them no longer being able to do things like go out and find brief hookups in men’s rooms.

Below the fold are some reactions to Louie’s steamy fantasy.

Why Did Rep. Louie Gohmert Make It So Easy To Name Him To America’s Most Bigoted Lawmakers List?

Letting gays to serve openly in the military will bring America "toward the end of [its] existence as a great nation," Rep. Louie Gohmert claimed on the House floor yesterday. He might have a point: Letting gays serve openly in Congress has, evidently, opened the doors to guys like Gohmert also holding office and being constitutionally permitted to speak on the House floor. Barney Frank's been serving since 1981; Gohmert got there in 2003. INEVITABLE COURSE OF EVENTS, PEOPLE.

Watch: Rep. Louie Gohmert Assaults Anderson Cooper with ‘Terror Baby’ Nonsense

Terror-babies

Texas state Rep. Debbie Riddle and Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) are convinced that foreign women are coming to the U.S. to have babies in order to get them citizenship, so the babies can then be trained as terrorists against the U.S. Neither have any solid evidence, but that doesn't stop them from being very, very convinced, and Anderson Cooper bears the brunt of their wingnuttery.
