What’s Brewing: Tea party mixes in social issues; details in anti-gay stoning; GLAAD Media Awards

Your weekday morning blend from Instant Tea:

1. Surprise!!! The tea party in Texas isn’t concerned only with fiscal issues, according to The Dallas Morning News (subscription required). Turns out, it also contains its fair share of homophobes, racists and misogynists: “Tea parties arose out of concern for liberty and fiscal issues,” says tea-bagging State Rep. Phil King, R-Weatherford. “However, you have a lot of people in the tea party groups in Texas that are focused on abortion, defense of marriage.” So let me see if I understand this — the tea party in Texas wants to shrink government if it means lower taxes for rich people, but wants to expand government if it means denying rights to minority groups? How convenient.

2. A 28-year-old murder suspect in Pennsylvania told authorities he killed his elderly victim by beating him with rocks because the Bible says homosexuals should be stoned to death. John Joe Thomas said he murdered 70-year-old Murray Joseph Seidman after the older man made sexual advances toward him. In fact, though, the two had been close companions and Thomas had been named executor and sole beneficiary of Seidman’s will. They met when Thomas was a patient at a psychiatric ward where Seidman worked. Thomas had recently been trying to get more money from Seidman, according to the victim’s brother. And Thomas became a suspect in Seidman’s murder after being picked up on other charges — indecent exposure, open lewdness, and disorderly conduct.

3. Russell Simmons and Ricky Martin were among those honored at the GLAAD Media Awards on Saturday in New York. Martin, who finally came out last March, took home the Vito Russo Award for promoting equality. Watch video of his acceptance speech below. For a full list of award winners, go here.

NC man ‘turns straight,’ murders gay roommate with ax and shotgun, blames Mucinex

Michael Anderson: “Mucinex made me do it.”

STEPHEN V. SPRINKLE  |  Unfinished Lives

In one of the grisliest murders the local Catawba County Sheriff’s Department can recall, a teen roommate used the gay panic defense to justify his alleged ax-and-shotgun murder of an older gay man.

Michael Anderson, 19, of nearby King’s Mountain, is accused of murdering 38-year-old Stephen Starr at about 4:45 a.m. on Monday in the Hickory house they shared.

The Hickory Daily Record reports that Anderson, claiming he “turned straight” during alleged sexual advances by Starr, shot him with a shotgun and pistol, carved words into his body and wrote some others with a pen, before lodging an ax in the victim’s stomach.

“He shot his roommate and took an ax to him,” Catawba County Sheriff Coy Reid told the Daily Record. “It’s one of the nastiest crime scenes I’ve been to.”

WATCH: Uncle says murdered teen wasn’t gay

Joshua Wilkerson’s uncle tells KHOU that the murdered 18-year-old from Pearland wasn’t gay. (The story doesn’t start until about halfway through the above video.)

Hermilo Vildo Moralez, 19, who is accused of beating Wilkerson to death with a wooden rod before burning his body, told authorities that Wilkerson made sexual advances toward him.

“Everything you hear, don’t judge a book by its cover,” said Wilkerson’s Uncle John Crochet. “This guy is not human, so don’t believe what he’s saying. …

“There had been some accusations by this animal that some sexual advances were made. We have no reason to believe that would have ever happened. The bottom line is whatever happened, he didn’t deserve to die,” said Crochet.

KHOU also reports that police believe Moralez may not have acted alone. Someone apparently set up a bogus Facebook page for Wilkerson while Moralez was already in custody saying Wilkerson was gay, hated negroes and was a fan of Justin Bieber.

BREAKING: Pearland teen beaten to death, body burned in possible anti-gay hate crime

Joshua Wilkerson

A man charged in the murder of a Pearland teen told authorities he beat the victim to death and burned his body after the victim made sexual advances toward him.

Hermilio Moralez, 19, was charged Thursday with murder in the death of Joshua Wilkerson, 18.

Wilkerson’s body was found Wednesday night in an overgrown field in Fort Bend County after a 24-hour search.

ABC 13 in Houston reports:

Authorities now say that Joshua Wilkerson, 18, was beaten with a large wooden rod and that his body was burned. Hermilio Moralez, 19, is charged with murder in Wilkerson’s death. According to court documents, Wilkerson gave Moralez a ride home from school Tuesday and Moralez stated that Wilkerson began to make sexual advances towards him. Moralez said they got out of the truck and began to fight when Wilkerson grabbed a large wooden rod and tried to hit him. Moralez said he took the piece of wood from Wilkerson and began to hit him with it. He said Wilkerson was not moving afterwards.
