East coast victories for LGBT candidates

While we’re waiting here in Houston for the results of today’s municipal elections the Victory Fund reports of victories for LGBT candidates on the East coast where polls closed an hour earlier than Texas.

State Del. Adam Ebbin (D-District 30) was elected to Virginia’s state Senate today, making him the Commonwealth’s first openly gay senator.

“I am honored by the trust the voters have showed in me,”  Ebbin said in a statement. “During the campaign, I listened to the voters’ concerns and will work on behalf of the values we all share: improving our public schools, expanding our transit system and cleaning up Virginia’s environment. I will make sure their voices are heard…”

“Alex Morse, a 22-year-old graduate of Brown University, has just been elected mayor of Holyoke, Mass., a city of nearly 40,000 residents near Springfield…”

“Zach Adamson has won his race for city council in Indianapolis, giving the city its first openly LGBT city council member.”

“An incumbent on the Largo, Fla., City Commission who attacked her openly gay opponent over his sexual orientation has lost her reelection bid to him tonight. Michael Smith defeated Mary Gray Black, who has a history of anti-gay and anti-trans activism on the commission.”

NH’s Smith misplaces ‘protect marriage’ playbook, admits he wants civil unions gone too

When the effort to repeal marriage equality in New Hampshire starts heating up, you’re going to hear all kinds of people saying that the rollback is all about the institution of marriage — nothing more, nothing less. DON’T. BUY. THAT. LIE. FOR. EVEN. A. SECOND. Because here’s the state’s “pro-family” leader, Kevin Smith of Cornerstone Policy Research (a major NOM ally), full-out admitting his desire to not only roll back same-sex marriages, but also the basic protections that come with the prior civil unions compromise:

Ultimately what we’d like to see is it revert back to what it was prior to civil unions,

and that you just had a marriage statute and not to mess with that in any way”

Hey Kevin: Point to even one mess — EVEN. ONE. MESS. — that the inclusive marriage system (much less the prior civil unions system) has brought to the Live Free or Die State. You won’t. Because you can’t.

But you keep on admitting that it’s the basic rights and protection you’re really gunning. Our public opinion polls stiffen up just listening to it.

Bow to foreign biases: AFA’s Smith mines commonality from homo-hostility

The far right’s latest talking point regarding DADT repeal? The one that says pro-equality activists are being culturally insensitive to those who “potential adversaries” who wish to dislike LGBT people.

This from the American Family Association’s David P. Smith:

The same people who are so thrilled about this change are also the same ones who preach to us all about how our nation and military should be less offensive to these nations who are our enemies. These same people apologize for American ideals and actions on a regular basis and bow to foreign leaders. There is a complete lack of analysis of this new military policy in this context. If we are to be more sensitive and understanding of these other nations, then our nation’s recent actions certainly are not going to accomplish that goal. It is bemoaned regularly how we need to be politically correct and accommodating to those of Islam, but the same people who believe such things are now offending greatly those whom they say they want to be more sensitive.

As stated on the website of the Center for Military Readiness, “Conspicuously missing from the list of 25 gay-friendly militaries are potential adversaries China, North Korea, and Iran. Their combined forces (3.8 million, not counting reserves) are more than two times greater than active-duty forces of the 25 foreign countries with gays in their militaries (1.7 million).” Our nation is thought to be a Christian nation by many of our adversaries and what this new policy demonstrates is something that certainly is not Christian, but will bring even further persecution of Christians trying to exist in these nations. It will bring further hatred of whom they call “The Great Satan” and even further emboldening against our country. One thing that these nations are right about is that this new policy is not of God.

David P. Smith: Don’t Ask-Don’t Care Undermines Our Nation [AFA]

Interesting how homo-hostility is always the one thing on which these folks find agreement. Why is this the one form of faith-based discrimination that’s supposedly right?!

The answer, of course, is that bias against LGBT people, regardless of motivation or justification, is just as wrong as that which has stifled women, people of color, people of varying faiths, the differently abled, or any other population that falls outside a majority or supposed norm. It is not insensitive to oppose Islamophobia and homophobia: It is both logically consistent and inarguably humane! And this is true even when the persecuted individual in one scenario is the persecutor in one another. Because it’s a sweepingly peaceful view within our shared world that deserves our determined focus, even if/when individual human shortfall within that world’s spectrum misdirects what could be, should be, and hopefully will someday be a unified progressive vision.

*Note: Remember, it was the AFA’s Bryan Fischer who said of Islam: “let’s choke off violent, anti-semitic ideology and actions wherever we find them, whether in the meetings of skinheads or in the mosques of America,” and who has said that “Permits should not be granted to build even one more mosque in the United States of America.

But as for any Islamic condemnations of homosexuality? Conserva-awesome, natch!

EQME Call To Action: Smith Outlines LePage’s Anti-LGBT Positions

Go, Betsy, Go!

She's right- as the polls stand right now, LePage is leading in the Maine gubernatorial race. But we have enough time to gather together up here and work HARD to elect a Governor who will not only defend our 2005 anti-discrimination law, but who has already voted for marriage equality in Maine and worked hard with us all.

WE MUST ELECT LIBBY MITCHELL. WE MUST.

It's time to talk about the harsh reality — that winning marriage equality in Maine hinges on what happens on November 2, 2010. That's when Maine voters will decide who to elect to the legislature and who will be the next governor.

It's not hard to imagine what happens to our plans to win marriage equality if Mainers elect Paul LePage as governor. This is the man who will not only veto a marriage bill but wants to repeal the Maine Human Rights Act. Think we're kidding? Not at all.

Repealing the Maine Human Rights Act would end basic non-discrimination protections for LGBT people, which we finally won — with overwhelming support from Maine voters — in 2005. After coming so close to winning marriage equality, Paul LePage would take us back to the dark ages.

But the fact is, Paul LePage leads in every single poll. If the election were held today, Paul LePage would be our next governor.

The good news is, if we mobilize like we did for marriage equality last year, we can change the outcome of this race.

Please join us at a Community Conversation to learn about how we can influence the outcome of this election, both in the governor's race and in the legislature.

Bring your friends and family. This is a call to action.

Sincerely,

Betsy Smith, Executive Director

Gay Designer Michael Smith Taints Obama’s Oval Office With Stolen MLK Quote

While fancypants interior decorator Michael Smith won't say how much he spent redesigning (or anything else about) Barack Obama's Oval Office makeover, maybe he should reveal where he looked for historical facts. Because that quote he's got laid in the carpet? The one attributed to Martin Luther King Jr.? It's kinda doesn't belong to MLK.

NJ GOP Rep. Chris Smith Works To Block LGBT Rights Group At United Nations

The International Gay & Lesbian Human Rights Commission (IGLHRC) has long been attempting to gain recognition as a consulting group with the United Nations, a status which would grant them access and the ability to comment officially on critical LGBT issues such as the murder and imprisonment of LGBT people around the world. In June, IGLHRC’s recognition was blocked by Egypt “on behalf of all African nations.”

After the U.S. delegation promised to pressure the UN on IGLHRC’s behalf, Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ) vowed to stop them. Smith, who voted against the Matthew Shepard Act and other LGBT rights laws, says IGLHRC plans to muzzle anybody who preaches that homosexuality is immoral. He wrote the UN a lengthy letter demanding that they again decline IGLHRC’s application.

Backing up Rep. Smith is the Christianist outfit Family Watch International, who has launched a petition campaign to the United Nations.

The IGLHRC is already pressuring a number of UN member states to change their laws to advance sexual rights. When the application was put on hold, the U.S. reacted very aggressively and announced that it was planning to take an unprecedented move to bypass the UN Committee on NGOs and go directly to the full ECOSOC body to try to ram the approval through. This has never been done before, and it has caused quite a stir among the UN delegations of many of the developing nations around the world. So we have a situation where the Obama administration is again putting support for the radical homosexual agenda above virtually all other considerations. In light of what this administration is doing domestically, we should not be surprised, but in this case, the United States government’s almost obsessive quest to advance sexual rights has been exposed to the whole world, and this should concern every American.

Once again, the American Christianist right is actively working to enable the murder, abuse, and imprisonment of LGBT people outside the United States.

VIDEO: Below is a history of the work IGLHRC has done for the last 20 years.

Joe. My. God.
