Good Luck Trying To See The Kids Are All Right In Singapore

In the United States, The Kids Are All Right is an Oscar nominated film. In Singapore, it's earned a rating of R21, reserved for "films that may contain adult issues, themes and more explicit scenes," which Brokeback Mountain and A Single Man also received. But in going an additional step, the Board of Film Censors has limited its release there to a single theater, since "films should not promote or normalize a homosexual lifestyle." At least they didn't outright ban it?

Ann Coulter: ‘The Left Is Trying To Co-opt Gays’

Ann
There's been a bit of CPAC-related news today, this being the last day of the conference. Ann Coulter took the podium this afternoon to address the attendees and was intent on being as characterstically provocative as possible.

In her speech, she spoouted that "the left is trying to co-opt gays. They should be on our side. We watched this for 30 years. The left keeps using one group after another to destroy the family. That is their goal, to destroy the family. Liberals want the family destroyed. Then you have loyalty directly to the state."

Coulter continued her invariably outlandish comments by proclaiming during a Q&A session that she thinks "there should be more jailed journalists."

Watch her CPAC speech, if you can stomach it, AFTER THE JUMP.

World Net Daily trying to exploit criticism of book linking gays to the Nazi party

crossposted on Holy Bullies and Headless Monsters

Last week, it was discovered that the right-wing site World Net Daily is selling a discredited book which accuses the gay community of being behind the Nazi Party in Germany during World War II.

This week not only is World Net Daily continuing to sell the book, The Pink Swastika, but it is also trying to capitalize on the recent controversy by claiming that the gay community is trying to silence the book's “findings.” The site calls The Pink Swastika:

a book that is disturbing, compelling and persuasive on its major point – that homosexuals dominated the German Nazi Party from its birth through its catastrophic demise.

It's a book that is vilified by America's “gay” activist establishment.

The Pink Swastika hasn't just been vilified by the the so-called “homosexual establishment.” It's been vilified by everyone with a working brain and seen for what it is – the latest attempt by a homophobe (i.e. Scott Lively) who has carried his vendetta against the lgbt community to the corners of the globe.

The biggest criticism of  The Pink Swastika is that Lively and co-writer Ken Abrams committed several distortions in formulating their theories. According to the site Box Turtle Bulletin:

Dr. Warren Throckmorton, an associate professor at the Christian-based Grove City College, has continued to add to his online series debunking The Pink Swastika. His latest installment is probably the most devastating, where Throckmorton catches Lively lying about his source information virtually red-handed. Throckmorton was joined in this endeavor by associate professor of history, Dr. Jon David Wyneken, whose Ph.D. is in modern German history with a focus on the period between 1933 and 1955. Together, they have undertaken a methodical exposé of Lively’s shoddy scholarship.

Throckmorton has written extensively regarding the errors behind The Pink Swastika, all in devastating detail.

Of course World Net Daily editor Joseph Farah  would probably disagree with Throckmorton. He claims to have read the book and found it to be accurate:

They say this book has been discredited,” Farah says. “But I've read the book and I've read all the criticism. The book more than stands up to all the attacks I've seen, most of which are completely baseless.”

However, based on Farrah's past and present history of exploiting conspiracy theories, one could easily guess that his vouching for The Pink Swastika has less to do with its supposed veracity and more to do with how much money it could potentially put in his pocket.

According to an article in the Huffington Post,  in 1996, Farah helped to promote a video pushing conspiracy theories about the death of Clinton White House counsel Vincent Foster at a pop.

The same article also says that Farrah is behind a cottage industry of exploiting birther conspiracies regarding President Obama (i.e. the notion that Obama is not a United States citizen) including the sale of bumper stickers, yard signs, postcards, and videos.

To put it in cynical terms, Farrah can be described as a sort of degenerate P.T. Barnum, seeking to reap the benefits of fear, xenophobia, and homophobia.

No doubt he will probably make his money and there is really nothing anyone can do about that. But the question should be asked just how many Congressional leaders will show up should Farrah and World Net Daily put on another “Taking Back America” conference.

We should all pay attention to that. It would definitely give new meaning to the term “lying down with dogs.”

If trying to get off a hate list, calling gays innately bad is prob. not best idea

It’s cute the way the professional anti-gays think they are the ones who get to determine whether or not their homo-hostile work has met a certain threshold. Especially when they further castigate millions while doing so:

Right, Tony. The facts and the science are on your side. That’s why you guys need to keep creating your own splinter groups in order to counter what credible science is actually saying, or hang on to ancient, skewed studies in order to do your daily work.

The truth: FRC is crapping a brick right now, which is why they keep talking about this SPLC label. And frankly, we say “bring it.” Because all they are doing is shedding more light on the documented facts that led them to the list. The documented facts that they can ignore all they want, but that the unforgiving annals of recorded history have meticulously noted.

Trying to get Illinois Republicans on the right side of equality

The Illinois legislature could pass a civil unions bill before the end of the year. In today’s Chicago Tribune, the press secretary to a former Illinois Republican, MIke Lawrence, gives advice to his fellow Republicans — and encourages them to get on the right side of the issue.

Earlier this month, Governor Pat Quinn just won a tough race for reelection against anti-equality GOPer Bill Brady. Quinn touted his support for the civil unions bill while Brady opposed it. Lawrence places some of the blame for the GOP candidate’s loss on his opposition to the civil unions legislation:

The legislation at hand does not sanction same-sex marriage. It explicitly protects the practices of religious bodies. They need not ritualize and sanctify the unions. But the proposal would allow gay and lesbian partners to visit critically or gravely ill partners in emergency rooms without negotiating complicated, costly legal mazes. It would give them parity with heterosexuals on estate matters. Moreover, it would permit heterosexual senior citizens who are widowed to form another fulfilling relationship without imperiling survivor benefits. In other words, legalizing civil unions would bolster the ability to provide the care giving, financial security and overall support we extol in dedicated, faithful spouses.

State Sen. Bill Brady’s adamant opposition helped fashion a mosaic of iciness and intolerance that likely cost the Republican gubernatorial candidate and his party a prize they should have snared given the national GOP tide and Illinois’ budgetary chaos under Democratic reign.

Brady lost for being anti-gay. That’s doesn’t fit with the conventional wisdom, but it’s the political reality.

Video: Candi still trying to make this “Day of Dialogue’ thing happen

In the first few seconds of this video, when Stuart Shepard refers to the “different opinions” that public school kids typically hear about sexual orientation (while displaying a GLSEN graphic), Focus on the Family tells you all you need to know about its contents:

Okay, so why wait for spring? Let’s talk now:

(a) The research from ALL. CREDIBLE. BODIES. OF. SCIENCE. does not make up a mere “opinion.”

(b) Separation of church and state is not an “unsettled issue.”

(c) Anti-LGBT condemnation based on personal faith beliefs is not an equal, public school “viewpoint.”

(d) Despite the remarkable resemblance in phrasing and look, Candi Cushman is not apparently related to (the incidentally very pro-gay) Susan “Cindy Brady” Olsen:

(e) While working to foster a climate that perpetuates myths, smiles and genial tone are not enough to turn intolerance into “true tolerance.”

(f) Deliberately misleading on what science actually says would not seem to be within the “model of Christ.”

And most importantly: (g) LGBT people’s worth as human beings is not up for “dialogue”!

If the Bradys were around today, they’d surely agree.

Audio: Matt’s just a dad trying to make it. Oh, in a world sans LGBT people or fair courts, that is.

Screen Shot 2010-11-08 At 10.38.54 AmOn Saturday morning, I was literally three feet away from him. A young dad, like a million other dads, playing with cutely rambunctious kids who seemed excited to be in a new state for the weekend. To the young’uns, this Philadelphia journey was surely just a family vacation, one of many they’ve been able to experience in the past few years, thanks to dad’s work travels. And dad was also surely thankful for this time to unwind with wife and children — a pause to cherish the truly important things in life.

But Matt Barber’s attire of a dress shirt, dress pants, and sensible suspenders indicated that his respite here in the hotel lobby was but a temporary one. While the rest of his family exited the revolving doors, off to see some of Philly’s sites or perhaps hit up a local restaurant that a back-home friend told them was a “can’t miss” destination, the patriarch had to stay back and conduct his usual business. Business that seeks to tell other kinds of families that it’s their loving bonds themselves that they should put on pause. Business that ignores credible science in order to foster myths about the one, true kind of sexual orientation or gender identity that makes up the world’s “norm.” Business that is all up in everyone else’s business, with a goal of stopping the progress that a vulnerable population has been able to make here in America.

Business that seeks to fire any judge who puts the the public’s shared constitution above certain, cherry-picked portions of certain people’s personal faith reads:
