NOM’s desperation mounts as it tries to unseat pro-equality councilmember in DC

Brian and Maggie are really hard up these days after that flop-o-rama of a Summer of Marriage road show. So now they are thinking smaller and inevitably think they are going to be more effective by trying to unseat elected officials that are standing in their way of the master plan to take marriage away from “teh homosexuals” in DC. As expected, in a majority minority area, NOM plays the race card. Again. Peter Montgomery at Right Wing Watch:

As we’ve been reporting, the National Organization for Marriage has been pumping money into Washington D.C.’s Democratic Party primaries in order to make good on its threat to punish elected officials who supported the District’s marriage equality law.

NOM is pouring its resources into attacks on Ward 5 Councilmember Harry ‘Tommy’ Thomas. We recently noted the chutzpah it took for NOM, which has bragged about efforts to get “white suburban Christian Republicans” to fund anti-equality candidates in DC, to send voters a flyer complaining about a fictional flood of “outside” money from San Francisco and New York supposedly attacking Hunter.

NOM’s latest flyer is even worse. It seems calculated for maximum divisiveness, featuring a rich, snooty, white guy looking down his nose at voters with claims that “DC Elites” are disrespecting voters in majority-Black Ward 5 by preventing a referendum on marriage equality. The flyer’s theme fits with comments by Bishop Harry Jackson, who has worked tirelessly to inflame racial divisions over the issue.
I wonder if the man whose image is in this flier knows his visage is pimping bigotry?

Openly gay Palm Springs mayor Steve Pougnet is ready to unseat anti-equality Mary Bono Mack

Kudos to Adam Bink for taking the discussion of the mid-terms in a different direction.

I have gotten somewhat tired of hearing the woes of Dems this cycle from folks reading Politico and assuming the majorities will all but evaporate. There’s an intentional ignorance in the traditional media to forget about open Senate seats ripe for pickup in New Hampshire, Missouri, Ohio and Kentucky, and competitive seats in North Carolina and elsewhere. For a variety of reasons, there hasn’t been as much attention on the House, where I’m focusing on CA-45, a district where Obama won and we have a candidate that can do the same.

CNN has a profile up about Steve Pougnet, the openly gay mayor of Palm Springs, CA who is running to take down Mary Bono Mack, the Republican incumbent. Steve, who I profiled earlier here, would be the first married, openly gay parent elected two Congress (he and his partner are raising twins, Julia and Beckham).

We met Steve while at Netroots Nation this year (above photo), and this is one seat that is winnable, and Steve is a well-known and much respected official. Bono Mack is severely underperforming for her district; she’s simply not doing the job and thinks no one is looking. Even worse, she’s painted as some sort of moderate Republican. Don’t be fooled. This is not moderate:

* She voted against repeal of DADT;

* She has not co-sponsored ENDA (or even say whether she will support it;

* She supported the 1999 Largent Amendment that would have banned same-sex adoption in the District of Columbia;

* She even voted against the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act.

If you see our friends at GOProud and LCR endorsing her, it’s a fair question to ask why her anti-equality positions are acceptable in 2010. Meanwhile, take a look at Pougnet’s first ad:

And the pitch…

A pleasant surprise phone call – Billy Kennedy dialing for dollars to unseat vile Virginia Foxx

This was a really interesting and unexpected event. Kate and I were watching VH1 Classics “Best of I Love the 70s” and the phone rings.

Usually if we don’t recognize the phone number we ignore it because it’s usually tele-spam (how many of you have received the urgent “we need to talk to you about reducing your interest rate NOW” from your credit card company that you have zero balance with). Kate this time decided to ask who was calling and it was Billy Kennedy, running for the U.S. Congressional seat in the 5th District of NC currently held by the repulsive, homophobic embarrassment Virginia Foxx.

Since I’ve blogged about Foxx and Kennedy’s campaign several times I thought that he was calling to ask about whether I could do a live blog or some fundraising pitch on the Blend, but he actually was just dialing for dollars outside of his district with the usual list, and I was on it. I don’t think my name clicked at first, but as we continued our conversation he made the connection.

He started laughing because I was the last person on the call list for the evening and he hadn’t made the connection. Anyway, I told him that it would be great to have him on the Blend for a liveblog to talk about Foxx’s poor record of serving her district and what he plans to bring to the table.

What he has said in the past:

I will not run a wedge campaign. I want to focus on what all of us can do to improve our lives. I plan to listen to my constituents and hear what’s important to them because I respect other people’s points of view. I will not allow my opponent to play “gotcha” politics on these questions of individual liberty.

I want to make it clear. I support freedom and equal rights for all people. I will protect all individual constitutional rights, without allowing politicians to pick and choose which Amendments deserve to be taken seriously.

Even when a candidate or political party wins an election through the use of a wedge issue, once they arrive in Washington they do nothing to further its cause. That is when it becomes painfully clear that the candidate never had any real commitment to the issue itself. The candidate simply used the issue to try to fool the people and win the election at any cost.

So once Billy recalled PHB, he was excited about the prospect of a liveblog, as he’s done them on DKos as well as Crooks & Liars and it would be nice to give him as boost – the 5th deserves better. We will have a date for a liveblog soon.
