DTC’s ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ tonight at the Wyly

Masterpiece theater

There’s much to like about Dallas Theater Center’s current production of this stage adaptation of To Kill a Mockingbird. (It’s a co-production with Casa Manana; its version closed last month, and while this one has almost the same cast and crew, it’s strikingly different.) Act 2 is the money, with an unparalleled courtroom scene and a profound coda about the mysterious Boo Radley.

Several of the performances are indelible as well. Anastasia Munoz, as a clucking society lady but mostly as the white girl who accuses a hapless black man of rape, quakes with such nervous ferocity, you fear she’ll shake loose a light fixture. Akron Watson as the victim of her prejudice and James Dybas as her racist father are equally good, and solid work comes from Bob Hess, Denise Lee and Morgan Richards as the precious tomboy Scout. But the production is all but stolen by Aiden Langford as the moppet Dill, a charming kid who could spread diabetes with his sweetness.

WATCH: Bystanders lift vehicle, pull motorcyclist from beneath it after fiery wreck in Logan, Utah

I have no reason for posting this here other than it happened in a city where I once worked at the daily newspaper — Logan, Utah — and the victim is apparently the nephew of one of my former colleagues. Also, it’s a pretty amazing rescue. According to my old paper, The Herald Journal, the motorcyclist remains in intensive care but is expected to recover. Watch the rescue below.

UPDATE: Suspect arrested in D.C. shooting

Police in Washington, D.C., have charged Darryl Willard with “assault with intent to kill while armed,” in connection with the shooting early Monday of a transgender woman in southeast D.C.

Washington, D.C. police are investigating the death of this unidentified person who was found wearing facial make-up and carrying a pair of light-colored heels

According to the Washington Post, after being shot at about 1:50 a.m. in the 2300 block of Savannah Street SE, the victim walked to the Seventh District Police Headquarters to report the crime. The Post reports that the victim knew her attacker and gave his name to police. Willard later turned himself in to authorities.

The victim, who is not named in the newspaper’s article, was taken to the hospital and is expected to recover from her injuries.

In the meantime, police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of a man whose body was found early Saturday, according to reports by the Associated Press. Police said that when the man’s body was found, he had makeup on his face and had with him a pair of light-colored high-heel shoes. The man appears to be Hispanic or Middle Eastern and between the ages of 25 and 30.

Police said they have no information on whether the dead man was gay or transgender, and that his body showed no signs of trauma.

The Monday shooting was the fourth time in less than two months that a transgender woman has been shot or shot at in the D.C. area. On July 20, Lashai Mclean died after being shot by a man who approached her as she walked with a friend in the city’s Northeast section. The man asked Mclean a question and then pulled a gun and shot her before she could answer, according to the friend, who was uninjured.

Eleven days later and just blocks away from the site of Mclean’s murder, a suspect approached another trans woman, asked for change and then pulled a gun and shot at her before she could answer. The shot missed and the woman was uninjured.

And in August, a D.C. police officer on medical leave was arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon after he stood on the hood of a car and fired into the car containing two men and two trans women. One of the men was injured slightly in the attack.

Can 4Chan Help Track Down This Portland Gay Basher Who Left His Victim Unconscious?

Police have released this sketch of an unknown gay bashing suspect — described as " 6'1, muscular, white with freckles, and blond" — who attacked a Portland, Oregon, man walking home at night on Nov. 1. The victim descended from a pedestrian walkway over train tracks, where his attacker, who was seated on a bike and accompanied by another man on a bike, "made remarks" about his sexual orientation before beating him unconscious; he's since been released from the hospital. Police are releasing this sketch a month after the attack because initial leads didn't pan out.

Ken “I’d Rip Off His Arm” Hutcherson plays the victim diva

Really now.  Can anyone take this guy seriously?  Ken Hutcherson sent out this prayer request email today.  He’s on his way to Chicago to “not be gay” together with Peter LaBarbara, the not-gay man who likes to do “field work” at gay BDSM conferences and post pictures on the internet of men having sex with men.

ANTIOCH BIBLE CHURCH

PRAYER WARRIOR

12 November 2010

On my way to Chicago to speak tomorrow night at the annual banquet for Americans for Truth About Homosexuality.  Please pray for safe travel and especially for protection there as the homosexual activists have planned to greet us with a protest.

Thank you so much for your prayers.

Pastor Hutch

This is from Ken Hutcherson the “Prayer Warrior“; Ken Hutcherson who constantly mentions his brief NFL career (that ended in 1977); Ken Hutcherson who promised to single-handedly bring down Microsoft because they supported LGBT-equality legislation; Ken Hutcherson who said this about what he calls “soft” and “effeminate” men:

If I was in a drugstore and some guy opened the door for me, I’d rip his arm off and beat him with the wet end.

Hutch is always so butch.  Why is he all of a sudden such the nellie drama queen?  Maybe the anticipation of seeing Peter again brings that out in him.  Comin’ home to papa.  A special video for Peter and Hutch is below the fold.

Carl Paladino Is The Real Victim In The ‘Dysfunctional Gays’ Saga

Carl Paladino says he is the one who's owed an apology, by "The Media," for attacking him over having the words "dysfunctional homosexual" in his speech script but never actually saying them. Yeah boyyy, play that victim card!

CNN’s Don Lemon to Long supporters: ‘I was the childhood victim of a pedophile’

Let me tell you what got my attention about this and I have never admitted this on television. I’m a victim of a pedophile when I was a kid. Someone who was much older than me.

– CNN anchor Don Lemon, during a segment on alleged sex predator “Bishop” Eddie Long, 9/25/2010

Consider how difficult this had to be for Don Lemon. I can’t imagine what ran through his mind as he built up to the moment of disclosure of this painful part of his life on live international television.

CNN anchor Don Lemon made a very personal admission in the most public of ways – during his live newscast. Lemon was discussing the sexual abuse cases against Bishop Eddie Long with three members of Long’s church who continue to support him.

Lemon had just played a soundbite from the lawyer of one of Long’s accusers about how the bishop allegedly got close to one of the young men in his church.

…Lemon’s admission led to an audible gasp from one of his guests. “I’ve never admitted that on television and I never told my mom until I was 30 years old,” Lemon said later in the segment. “Especially African-American men don’t want to talk about those things.”

What I do know is that crossing the line from journalist to interested party had to be beyond difficult. Facing Long supporters had to push some seriously painful buttons. Weighing it all against the possible good it can do for those who suffered similar abuse out there is immeasurable. Lemon’s strength to share will help someone else muster up the courage to tell their story.

For me, “thank you” is too insignificant a thing to say in response to what Don Lemon did.

MADDOW: DADT Victim Maj. Mike Almy Vs. “Deceptive” Sen. John McCain

Major Mike Almy, who was booted out of the armed services after the government snooped into his private email, appeared on Rachel Maddow last night to denounce Sen. John McCain as “deliberately deceptive” for denying to gay reporters that the military performs such investigations. Almy points out that McCain “sat twenty feet away from me” during Almy’s testimony about his ejection before Congress.

Joe. My. God.
