Vince Vaughn’s Dismal The Dilemma Opening Is Gay (But Not ‘Homosexual Gay’)

Aww, I bet you guys are really sad that after Universal Pictures' marketing coup for The Dilemma — which got every media outlet talking about the, uh, script — the film is expected to earn just .7 million during its four-day opening weekend, earning it second place against The Green Hornet, but marking Vince Vaughn's worst opening since 2001's Domestic Disturbance. (No, I don't remember what that movie was about, either.) The Ron Howard-directed film, which scored just 25 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, cost million to make. Hey, at least Queen Latifah got paid!

Vince Vaughn ‘clarifies’ that gay slur isn’t about gays, just being gay, or being like gays, or something

Yes, and I’m sure when he uses the n-word he doesn’t mean black people, he means the “other” meaning of the n-word. What an idiotic thing to say.

Vince Vaughn Is Thrilled Homophobic Humor Is Alive And Well In His Movie

It's not often you'll see an actor disagree with his director in public. Even Zach Galifianakis was cautious to bash The Hangover 2's temporary decision to give Mel Gibson a cameo. But that's not why Vince Vaughn is agreeing with The Dilemma's Ron Howard about keeping the "electric cars are gay" joke in the film. It's because Vaughn is just the type of guy you'd expect to be completely at ease with bullying.

Vince Vaughn Defends Anti-Gay Joke in ‘The Dilemma’

Dilemma

In late September, I posted the trailer to the Vince Vaughn/Kevin James film The Dilemma, which opened with an off-putting "electric cars are gay" joke, and after a reference from CNN's Anderson Cooper (and an up-till-then ignored request from GLAAD) the trailer was edited. GLAAD requested the joke be edited out of the film as well.

Now, Vince Vaughn is defending the joke:

"Let me add my voice of support to the people outraged by the bullying and persecution of people for their differences, whatever those differences may be. Comedy and joking about our differences breaks tension and brings us together. Drawing dividing lines over what we can and cannot joke about does exactly that; it divides us. Most importantly, where does it stop?"

The problem is that Vaughn can't join the outrage over anti-gay bullying while contributing to (and collecting a paycheck for) the derogatory dialogue which to some makes that bullying permissible.

Here’s The Dilemma Trailer Without Vince Vaughn’s ‘So Gay’ Line. Makes Everything Better, Right?

Above, the new The Dilemma trailer from Universal Pictures, without Vince Vaughn's opening line about electric cars being "so gay," which got Anderson Cooper so upset. An unnamed Universal exec originally said the studio screened the trailer for the folks at GLAAD, who had no problem with it; GLAAD says that was a lie. So in order to see Vaughn's character utter the line, you'll have to buy a movie ticket, because Universal didn't strip the dialogue from the actual film. Success?
