Woman pleads guilty in case of videotaped beating of trans woman at McDonald’s

Teona Brown, 19, has pled guilty Thursday, Aug. 4, to first degree assault charges and a hate crime charge in connection with the beating of transgender woman Chrissy Polis last April in Towson,

Chrissy Polis

Md. The attack was captured on video by a McDonald’s employee — who filmed the assault rather than step in and try to stop it — last April. The video went viral online and was used, along with new footage from a surveillance camera, in court hearings this week. CBS Baltimore has this report on the plea.

Conviction on a first degree assault charge carries a maximum sentence of 25 years, and a hate crime conviction could add another 10 years. Because Brown pled guilty to the attack, prosecutors are recommending that the judge sentence her to five years in prison. A sentencing hearing has been set for next month.

Polis was present in court on Thursday, but told reporters she was nervous about being there and had no comment. “I just want to lay low and keep my life as normal as possible,” she said.

A second person charged in the attack was 14 at the time and has been charged with assault as a juvenile. Because she is a minor, her identity has not been released.

Below is a video of a news report aired on the Washington, D.C., Fox news program when the attack happened. It includes video of the attack and, as State’s Attorney Scott Shellenberger said this week, “The severity of the beating is much easier to understand when you see a video. They say a picture’s worth a thousand words. Well, a video’s worth a million.”

Video: NOM H8s viral vid so much, they’ll use it to raise Christmas cash

From the first moment I saw the video in question, I envisioned this kind of response campaign taking shape:

So essentially NOM is accusing the people behind the “FCKH8″ campaign of exploiting kids — while themselves exploiting the concept of kids and parenting to raise funds. Typical. And disgusting.

But not gonna lie: Putting kids in this “FCKH8″ initiative always struck me as an unsavvy move. When objectively weighing what the kids do for the video versus what they do for the forces who’ve turned every single anti-equality fight into a child war, who can honestly say that we come out the beneficiary?

PHOTOS: Meet Craigery Morgan, The Web’s Handsome New Lip-Syncing Viral Star

Spreading around everywhere from Reddit to RealJock.com, this video of buff Orlando-based hotty Craigery Morgan lip synching to Saturday Night Live's "Surprise Party" skit is adorbs. In just two days it's clocked nearly 700,000 views, making Morgan an insta-viral star. The former Abercrombie & Fitch store staffer grew up in Anaheim (as my social network stalking says) also recorded himself performing the hilarious "Activia" skit, and now it's your job to blow that one up too.

Did I mention I went around the web to scope my new crush? Photos inside.

WATCH: Hipster DJ/Producer Team Duck Sauce’s Cameo-Filled Video ‘Barbra Streisand’ Is Good, Goes Viral

Screen shot 2010-09-28 at 4.34.01 PM

I spent just a little extra time among the music blogs this very hot afternoon in LA because of the always very hot hot links the guys at Modern Tonic find to fill our weeky music column. So i ran right into this — going viral literally in the course of maybe 20 minutes.

Screen shot 2010-09-28 at 4.34.50 PMThis "Non-stop, uber cool party diary including cameo appearances from the likes of Kanye West, Pharrell Williams, Vampire Weekend …" (Pop Dash) If you don't listen now, you will be getting more opportunities.

Duck Sauce is producer A-Trak and DJ Armand Van Helden and the song will be released Oct.10. I'm clearly not hip enough to be a huge Barbra fan, but certainly my dad knows some and as there are a number in the Towleroad reader base. i'm pleased to bring you news of just how cool you are.

Perhaps, again.

No seriously. Following on Beyonce's performance in her honor a few years ago at the Kennedy Center, it's quite clear that this generation has sufficient respect, knowledge, talent, and wit to match Ms. Streisand as well as to pay homage.

Give a hand identifying other cameos, mainly NYC-based music folks with hipster tendencies,  in the comments

Watch Duck Sauce, "Barbra Streisand" and Beyonce for a bonus…after the Jump:

And here is Beyonce at Kennedy Center Honors. You may remember it as the evening she politely hugged then President Bush.
