Okay, so how much more mainstream can gay marriage get? Well, Star Trek star George Takei and his husband, Brad Altman — who were married last September in California before the passage of Prop 8 — are going to compete on The Newlywed Game on the Game Show Network, according to a report by KFMB-TV in San Diego.

It is the first time a same-sex couple has competed on the show, which has aired off and on since 1967. Newlywed Game M.C. Carnie Wilson said she thinks it’s about time the show included same-sex couples, and reportedly has been lobbying for an all-gay episode.

Takei said and he and Altman see the show as a chance to show people that same-sex couples really aren’t any different than straight couples: “What we want is to display the normality and the joy of having a happy union. To be included in something we never felt we’d be included in is very satisfying.”

He also said he has been studying up on his partner’s wardrobe and food ordering habits to get ready for the show.

Other celebrity couples slated to appear are Dancing with the Stars pros Edyta Sliwinksa and Alec Mazo; Davy Jones and his new bride, actress Jessica Pacheco; Biggest Loser couple Suzy Preston and Matt Hoover; Christopher Knight and Adrianne Curry; and Kristy Swanson and Lloyd Eisler.
