The Vatican denounced the forthcoming UN declaration that condemns discrimination based on homosexuality. The church is worried that nations that don’t recognize same-sex marriage would be pressured to do so.
The proposed UN declaration, to be adopted on Dec . 10 by the UN general assembly, called for an end to the practice of punishing people for their sexual orientation. The declaration was aimed at countries where homosexuality can be punished by death, such as Iran and Saudi Arabia.
The response to the Vatican’s announcement has been widely condemned. An editorial in Italy’s La Stampa newspaper called the Vatican’s reasoning “grotesque.”
