Lawrence v. Texas, the U.S. Supreme Court case that overturned Texas’ sodomy law almost nine years ago, has been in the news quite a bit lately. In November the second of the two plaintiffs, John Lawrence, passed away in Houston. Then, last week, law professor Dale Carpenter’s book about the case, Flagrant Conduct, was released. Carpenter’s book created a stir in the gay blogosphere after The New Yorker posted a review highlighting the fact that Carpenter claims Lawrence and his co-plaintiff, Tyron Garner, never even had sex.
Now comes this 20-minute YouTube video about the case from Lambda Legal, which represented Lawrence and Garner. The video, called Overruled, includes appearances by several Dallasites, including Louise Young and Vivienne Armstrong, Dennis Coleman and J.W. Richard.
With all this buzz now, can you imagine what the 10-year anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision in Lawrence v. Texas will be like next year? Then again, hopefully we’ll all be too busy celebrating another landmark gay rights victory handed down by the Supreme Court.
