We’re still trying to decide who would make a worse speaker of the Texas House — Rep. Leo Berman, R-Tyler, who’s already announced that he plans to run for the post currently held by Speaker Joe Straus, or Rep. Warren Chisum, R-Pampa, who now says he’s also considering running.
Berman plans to introduce an anti-immigration measure similar to the one that passed recently in Arizona, and he’s called President Barack Obama “God’s punishment on us.” On the anti-gay front, Berman was a co-author of Texas 2005 constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage.
Chisum, meanwhile, is perhaps the best-known homophobe in the Legislature. He also co-authored the marriage amendment, and he’s sponsored legislation that would have banned gay adoptive/foster parents. Most recently Chisum filed a brief in court opposing a gay divorce in Dallas.
“Everyone has the ability to get married,” Chisum told Dallas Voice in April. “All they have to do is find someone of the opposite sex.”
While Straus may still be somewhat of an unknown on LGBT issues, these guys make him look like Harryette Erhardt. Could you possibly need any more motivation to vote in November?
