Lawrence King, a 15-year-old, student at E.O. Green Junior High School in Oxnard, Calif., has died after being shot in the head by a fellow student on Tuesday, Feb. 12. Initial reports indicated that King, who self-identified as gay, was recovering from his injuries. However, later reports said King had been declared brain dead, and then, that he had died. The suspect, a 14-year-old classmate of King’s who has not been identified because he is a minor, is being charged with a hate crime in connection with the shooting and faces possible murder charges. Classmates said King often wore women’s jewelry, make-up, high heels and other feminine attire. King and the alleged shooter were often at odds with one another, according to reports, and the shooting occurred Tuesday in a classroom following an argument between the two boys. Police said more than 20 other students were in the room at the time.
