The Carrollton City Council passed, on a 5-2 vote, an employment nondiscrimination ordinance at its Tuesday, Feb. 5 meeting.

The new ordinance covers city employees, contractors and political appointees. Both sexual orientation and gender identity are included. Pregnancy and political beliefs were also added to the city’s law to protect its employees.

Several Resource Center staff members attended the council meeting in support of the ordinance — as did detractors.

During the public comment period, one dissenter complained the new law would allow men to use women’s bathrooms. According to Cannon Brown, who attended the meeting, necrophilia and pedophilia were also brought up by people — who must work in some very strange offices.

Resource Center employee Leslie McMurray pointed out that equality for more groups doesn’t take away equality from others.
