The 2019 Creating Change Conference is getting underway today in Detroit. But here in Dallas, people are already looking forward to 2020 when the conference returns to Big D.

Creating Change 2020 will be held Jan. 15-19 at the Sheraton Dallas Hotel. It will be the first time the conference has been held in Dallas since 2010.

Officially known as the National Conference for LGBT Equality: Creating Change, the event was first held in 1988, the year after the 1987 National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights. The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force — now known as the National LGBTQ Task Force — created the conference then to give organizers and activists around the country the chance to “gather and teach each other and build a stronger movement.”

The first Creating Change conference was held in November 1988 in Washington, D.C., with Virginia Apuzzo, John D’Emilio and the Rev. Renee McCoy as speakers. About 300 people attended.

Today, Creating Change has grown into a five-day event attended annually by about 3,500 people.

The 2019 conference, beginning today, includes five days of workshops, institutes, gatherings, entertainment and more.
