Viega plans to move back to Australia with her partner

DENVER — Sen. Jennifer Veiga, D-Denver, the first openly gay lawmaker in the Colorado Legislature, plans to resign at the end of the session and move to Australia with her partner.

Veiga told The Denver Post that her partner of about 15 years is from Australia and wants to be closer to her mother. Veiga has served in the Legislature since her 1996 election to the House.

Veiga recently helped shepherd a bill through the Legislature that included new and revised oil and gas rules protested by the industry. She also sponsored a bill passed this year that extends health insurance coverage to the partners of gay and lesbian state employees.

A Democratic vacancy committee will appoint Veiga’s successor.
