Cruel Intentions isn’t the only newish musical to touch on youth culture opening this week in the Arts District. Young adult fodder seems to be the new trend for the musical stage, with Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and the SpongeBob Squarepants musical garnering massive audiences and snatching up trophies.  But before either of them took to the stage, the Percy Jackson YA series got the theater treatment in 2014 with The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical.

The musical follows the titular character who discovers he’s part god, part human and embarks on a quest to find Zeus’ missing lightning bolt before war breaks out among all those Greek gods you studied in school.

The teenager and his cohorts sing and dance their way to Camp Half-Blood with showtunes about minotaurs and school expulsion before taking a cross-country journey to clear Percy’s name, retrieve his mom from the Underworld and find Hades… who may have stolen The bolt — all while wearing fabulous winged shoes.
