The Houston Visitor’s Bureau is planning to cash in on Annise Parker’s election victory and promote the city as an LGBT travel destination.

Houston is actually behind the curve on this one. The Dallas Visitor and Convention Bureau has been marketing to the LGBT community for years. Philadelphia, traditionally known as the city of brotherly love, was the first major city to market in the gay press. That successful marketing effort began about 10 years ago.

In her public service career, Parker has never been the poster child for the LGBT community. But asked whether she would be part of the marketing campaign, she said, “I’m proud to market this city any way I can.”
