The hills are alive with the sound of wedding bells. (And, yes, Salzburg, where this scene was filmed, is in Austria)

Marriage equality began in Austria on Jan. 1 as a result of a 2017 high court ruling. Universal marriage rights for all couples replaces civil partnerships that became legal in the country in 2010.

The ruling recommended marriage equality begin in 2019 unless the country’s parliament pushed the date forward. The current right-wing ruling coalition opposed the right for same-sex couples to marry but said it would abide by the court’s ruling.

Austria became the 16th European country with marriage equality. Same-sex couples began marrying in The Netherlands in 2001. And Austria became the 26th country in the world with marriage equality.

The first couple to marry were lesbian, both 37, and had been engaged for four years, according to the Associated Press.
