UPDATE: Variety is now reporting that Roseanne Barr has also been dropped by her talent agency over her racist tweet this morning. In a statement issued today, ICM said, “We are all greatly distressed by the disgraceful and unacceptable tweet from Roseanne Barr this morning. What she wrote is antithetical to our core values, both as individuals and as an agency.  Consequently, we have notified her that we will not represent her. Effective immediately, Roseanne Barr is no longer a client.”

Variety is reporting that ABC has canceled the revival of Roseanne, within just a few hours of the show’s star, Roseanne Barr, posting a tweet in which she called Valerie Jarret, a former aide to President Barack Obama, the child of the “Muslim Brotherhood & Planet of the Apes.”

Variety posted news of the cancellation at 10:47 a.m., PT.

Barr quickly deleted the tweet and apologized to Jarrett, but apparently that wasn’t good enough for ABC: “Roseanne’s Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show,” ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey said in a statement.

Openly lesbian comedian Wanda Sykes, who worked as a consulting producer on the first season of the Roseanne revival — which had already been picked up for a second season — beat ABC to the punch. Before the network announced the cancellation, Sykes issued a statement saying she wouldn’t be back for the second season.

And Sara Gilbert, the openly lesbian actress who played Roseanne’s daughter Darlene in both the original series and the reboot, issued a statement condemning Barr’s tweet. She said, “Roseanne’s recent comments about Valerie Jarrett, and so much more, are abhorrent and do not reflect the beliefs of our cast and crew or anyone associated with our show. I am disappointed in her actions to say the least. This is incredibly sad and difficult for all of us, as we’ve created a show that we believe in, are proud of, and that audiences love— one that is separate and apart from the opinions and words of one cast member.”

After deleting the insulting tweet, Barr said she “apologize[s] to Valerie Jarrett and to all Americans. I am truly sorry for making a bad joke about her politics and her looks. I should have known better. Forgive me-my joke was in bad taste. I am now leaving Twitter.”
