Having renowned gay architect Philip Johnson design this building on the campus of the Cathedral of Hope was a coup, no doubt, but the space has grown beyond its use as a place of worship to become a community landmark. Musical performances, meditation services, weddings, health fora and more have been frequently staged in this asymmetrical, engaging space that lends itself to lovely photos but also quiet reflection.

Although only five years old, the Teddy Bear Party has grown quickly and impressively from a small fundraiser to a much-anticipated social event. The group’s nine founders (Jason Hanna, Joe Riggs, Steve Rahhal, Gary McDonald, Mike Richardson, Julio Gonzelez, Bryan Carr, Mark LeDoux and Mark Clay) started it as a way to give teddy bears to needy children around Christmastime. That’s still its mission … 2,000 stuffed animals and $50,000 in donations later. Anyone who thinks “family values” doesn’t include gay people who put their money on the line to help out needy children doesn’t understand what the words “family” or “values” mean.
