Despite the sunny lightheartedness of hosts Kumail Nanjiani and Tracey Ellis Ross, the announcement of the nominations for the 91st Academy Awards was filled with shocking omissions and inclusions — some in so-called lesser categories were downright earthquaking, and in the major categories still stunning.

For instance: Won’t You Be Me Neighbor? and Three Identical Strangers — both frontrunners for documentary feature — were completely left out; former winner Justin Hurwitz’s score for First Man — which has won almost every major composing award so far — was snubbed; and Bradley Cooper was blanked for directing A Star Is Born, though he received three other nominations for it.

The Favourite and Roma tied with 10 nominations overall, followed by Vice with nine, A Star Is Born with eight and Black Panther with seven.

Here are the nominees, with some notes.
