RHONDA THOMASON  | Special Contributor As a retired elementary school teacher from the South, I am inspired by the progress we’ve made in the fight against bullying. Over my 25-year career, I witnessed far too many students hurt by words and actions simply because they were different. Back then, I took the necessary steps to [...]

FEEDBACK: Why treat gossip as news?

Why is the Voice treating gossip as news? Let’s take a page from an eighth-grade government textbook: In the United States of America, our justice system operates on the principle of innocent until proven guilty. Roughly speaking, it means the burden of proof rests on the accuser. Sadly, it seems more and more these days, [...]

Perry’s anti-gay ad in Iowa What does gays serving in the military have to do with prayer in schools or your faith, Gov. Perry? Shamelessly pandering to voters of faith by conflating two unrelated issues is not a recipe for success. Gov. Perry’s attack on service men and women regardless of their sexual orientation is [...]

Double standard Since the gay community and the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation throw such fits when we feel we have been insulted or slighted (Wanda Sykes starring in a commercial chastising a group of teens using the term “so gay,” Blake Shelton coming under fire for anti-gay comments and most recently Brett Ratner [...]
