NY: seven arrested in vicious anti-gay ‘wolf-pack’ torture session in the Bronx

What in the world is going on? As you see, NYC, a “gay metropolis,” where by Red State standards, LGBTs are more visible, politically within the mainstream and have more legal rights locally than many, homophobia is alive and well in the most vile and beastly manner.

In this incident, it proves that in gang thug life, where being a “man” does not include being gay, three men were treated as subhumans; what’s tragic is that the suspects range from 16-23. So young, already culturally ingrained with such hate, violence, homophobia (and at its root, misogyny) that they engage in pack behavior worse than animals. WABC:

The first of the related attacks occurred at approximately 3:30 a.m. Sunday, when a 17-year-old was approached by members of a street crew calling themselves the “Latin King Goonies.” The teen was apparently an aspiring member of the group. Kelly says the crew forced the 17-year-old into an unoccupied ground-floor apartment on Osborne Place, where he was thrown into a wall, made to strip naked, hit in the head with a beer can, cut with a box cutter and sodomized with the wooden handle of a plunger.

According to police, his tormentors denounced the victim and questioned him about his contact with a 30-year-old man who the same suspects would later assault. Afterwards, his assailants escorted him out of the location and warned him not to call police. At about 5:30 a.m., the victim walked into a nearby hospital and was treated and released. There, he explained his injuries by claiming he had been jumped by unknown assailants on the street.

“These suspects employed terrible wolf-pack odds of nine-against-one, odds which revealed them as predators whose crimes were as cowardly as they were despicable,” Kelly said. Then, police say the 30-year-old man was lured there at 9:30 p.m. Sunday.

He was allegedly forced to strip to his underwear and then tied to a chair opposite from the teenager. The teenager, at the direction of his assailants, hit the older male several times in the face and burned him with a cigarette.

The suspects also hit the man with their fists and a chain, police said, and sodomized him with a small baseball bat. They forced him to consume 10 cans of the malt beverage “Four Loko” that he had with him.

Moscow’s Gays Held a Protest Rally And Nobody Got Arrested. Well, Except The Neo-Nazis

When Russian President Dmitry Medvedev fired Moscow's bigoted Mayor Yuri Luzhkov and replaced him with Vladimir Resin (pictured below), there was no guarantee the successor was going to be any friendlier to the gays. Especially when Resin told reporters that while "I treat everyone equally," in the case of a planned gay rights demonstration by recently detained activist Nikolai Alexeyev (pictured top), "I do not support this." And yet the rally came and went Friday, with Alexeyev leading about 10 people in protesting Swiss International Air Lines for its role in helping Russian authorities detain Alexeyev at Domodedovo airport last month.

Nikolai Alekseev, Gay Activists Arrested in Protest of Moscow Mayor

Alekseev

UK Gay News reports that eleven activists including Nikolai Alekseev have been arrested during a protest outside Moscow City Hall:

"They were taking part in a demonstration against the homophobic mayor of Moscow, Yuri Luzhkov, and his 'faggots' remark which a Moscow court ruled recently was not hate speech. Those arrested were said to have chained themselves to the railings outside City Hall. Also reported arrested was a reporter from Agence France Presse.  She was seen by activists being hauled into a police van.  But Mr. Alekseev told UK Gay News later that she was not taken to the police station and was presumably released without charge. The eleven activists were taken to the Tverskoy Police Station in Moscow. Mr. Alekseev said that he was injured during his arrest. He was speaking by telephone from inside a police van from which  other  activists were heard chanting 'happy birthday Mayor Luzhkov' – it is the Mayor’s 74th birthday today."

The AP adds:

"The two dozen demonstrators had been protesting the policies of Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov, who has called homosexuals 'satanic' and thwarted attempts to hold a gay pride rally in the city. Police detained most, if not all, of those participating in Tuesday's rally, which was held without a required permit near city hall. The activists handcuffed themselves to a monument for the 13th-century Russian prince who founded Moscow, displayed a papier-mache mummy resembling Luzhkov and unfurled posters ridiculing the mayor and his billionaire wife, Yelena Baturina. The activists said they objected to Luzhkov's recent use of the word 'fag,' and a court's subsequent ruling that the word could not be deemed offensive."

Alekseev called for the rally after being abducted by men thought to be with the Russian secret police over the weekend.

70 Gay Rights Activists Arrested at Demonstration in Nepal

Kathmandu police detained 70 gay rights activists including openly gay MP Sunil Pant yesterday, during a demonstration in Nepal's capital over government identification for transgender people, ABC reports:

Pant "Nepali men and women who identify as transgender are seeking citizenship certificates with their gender marked as 'third sex' instead of male or female. Sunil Babu Pant, lawmaker and founder of the Blue Diamond Society, a gay rights group, says more than 70 people were detained near the prime minister's office and parliament. 'We are running out of patience and are demanding our rights,' Pant said from a detention centre. "Without the citizenship papers, the sexual minorities are unable to get a job, enrol in schools or colleges, seek treatment in hospitals and travel," he said. 'They cannot even inherit parental property.' … Kathmandu police chief Ramesh Kharel said the activists were detained for 'violating the norms' by gathering at a place where demonstrations were not allowed."

In related news, one initiative that Pant has also spearheaded to raise awareness about the plight of transgender people in the country is the Beauty and Brains Talent contest.

Beauty and Brains – 2 min trailer from Catherine Donaldson on Vimeo.

Write the filmmakers: "To be third-gender in Nepal means a choice of three careers; giving blessing at weddings, begging or prostitution. They are excluded from family and school, are prey to security forces, blackmail and sexual abuse. However, as Nepal attempts to write a new constitution there is a chance of change. In order to be heard above the clamour and civil unrest, the third-genders with Sunil Pant and the Blue Diamond Society embarked on the Beauty and Brains Talent Contest. This is the story of a community gaining the confidence to confront prejudice and tell society they are natural human beings."

Family values: son arrested for running over 85-year-old mom after she ‘fell’ out of car

I’m sure that Steven Molin, 58, thought that ludicrous “fell out” story would fly, especially after he backed up and ran over her repeatedly. The problem is he already had a history of elder abuse. At what point was he SURE she was under the vehicle, hmmm?

Steven Molin, 58, of Darby is charged with murder in the death of his mother, 85-year-old Emily Belle Molin.

Police say Molin picked up his mother from the Sterling Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center Nursing home in Media, Pa. and drove her to Maryland on Tuesday. Then, just before midnight, the Worcester County, Md. Sheriff’s Dept. responded to a reported vehicle accident on Carey Road in Berlin.

Emily Molin was found to be injured and was rushed to the hospital where she died from her injuries.

During the investigation, police say Steven Molin told them his mother fell out of the vehicle, so he then backed up after discovering she had fallen. The elder Molin was run over two to three times, police said.

Police say they investigated Molin, and decided his story didn’t match up with the evidence. He was then charged with murder.

Hat tip to Jonathan Turley, who said: “I must say that it would help if the mug shot showed a tad more grief at the fact that he had just turned his mother into road kill.”

Activists Arrested in San Diego Prop 8 Sit-in

Protester Brian Baumgardner is handcuffed after being arrested during a sit-in for Gay Marriage at the County Clerk’s office on Thursday. Photo by Sandy Huffaker Jr./Sign On San Diego

Reports of more civil disobedience actions from the LGBT community. From Sign-on San Diego.

On the day hundreds of gay and lesbian couples statewide planned to obtain their long-awaited marriage licenses, a crowd of about 50 people gathered at the county clerk’s office Thursday to protest a federal judge’s stay of a federal ruling that Proposition 8 is unconstitutional.

“We believe that county officials and the Attorney General have the authority and the obligation to allow marriage licenses to proceed based on both federal court findings and that Prop. 8 is unconstitutional and the governor’s filings in Prop. 8 cases,” Tyler Dylan-Hyde said. “We are asking you to do what’s right.”

Three heterosexual couples had approached for their scheduled appointments this morning. The group refused to move and allow the couples access to the office.

Call me a radical, but I’m a fan of no Justice, no peace strategies myself. (Protestors in fact shouted: “We shall not be moved. No equality. No business as usual.”) I see these actions as a helpful addition to the public discourse, but by no means a replacement. We can still work, in the courts, at the ballot box, in the halls of Congress.

But, the political disenfranchisement of LGBT community and our disadvantage of being a small minority make such tactics an uphill battle. It’s so easy to ignore our community’s call for equality, in the media, in the political sphere. And, of course, there are always so many more important things going on…

The forces that fight us are relentless, tireless, Machiavellian and do everything in their power to remain covert. While many of our allies remain feckless and disengaged. We need to demonstrate how important these goals are to our community. Our civil rights are at stake, the government’s obligation to treat us equally under the law.

And we’re not afraid to take our fight out into the sun, into the spotlight, because we’re right. Our actions will be vindicated by history, as have the similar actions of those who came before; fighting unjust wars, the right for women to vote, and the right for men to be men, not property.

I salute these activists.

GetEqual tweeted 12 were arrested, this report says 3 arrested, 6 “later removed.” Investigating. Sure more details will become available soon.

Flight Attendant Arrested After Exiting Plane Via Emergency Slide

Slater

JetBlue flight attendant Steven Slater made a dramatic exit from a flight he was working at Kennedy Airport today shortly after it landed, City Room reports:

Slater2  "One passenger got out of his seat to fetch his belongings from the overhead compartment before the crew had given permission. Mr. Slater instructed the man to remain seated. The passenger defied him. Mr. Slater approached and reached the passenger just as he pulled down his luggage, which struck Mr. Slater in the head. Mr. Slater asked for an apology. The passenger instead cursed at him. Mr. Slater got on the plane’s public address system and cursed out all aboard. Then he activated the inflatable evacuation slide at service exit R1, launched himself off the plane, an Embraer 190, ran to the employee parking lot and left the airport in a car he had parked there.

In a statement, JetBlue said it was working with the Federal Aviation Administration and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to investigate the incident."

CBS: "Aviation sources said Slater got on the plane’s public address system and yelled:
'To the passenger who called me a (expletive), (expletive) you. I’ve been in the business 28 years. I’ve had it. That’s it.'"

Slater, 39, was arrested in Queens and charged with reckless endangerment and criminal mischief. He could get seven years if convicted of the charges.

UPDATE: He grabbed two beers from the galley before he left.
