Complaint: LGBT immigrants abused, neglected at detention centers run by Homeland Security

The National Immigration Justice Center has filed civil rights complaints on behalf of 13 LGBT immigrants who were allegedly abused and neglected at detention centers run by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security in nine states, including one in Houston. The Heartland Alliance’s NIJC filed the complaints today in a letter addressed to Homeland Security’s Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, calling on the department to investigate and implement new policies.

The group has also launched a petition calling on the DHS and President Barack Obama to end the abuse of LGBT immigrants in detention.

The 13 complaints include allegations of sexual assault, denial of adequate medical care, long-term solitary confinement, discrimination and abuse, and ineffective complaints and appeals process. Below are a few examples from the letter, which you can download in its entirety here:

• [Juan] was sexually assaulted by two other detainees. Despite repeated requests for a transfer to another facility because he feared for his safety [Juan] was not transferred until three months after the incident, when ICE Headquarters intervened. In the meantime, the only “protection” that the Otero County Detention Center offered was placement in the “hole.” (Otero County Detention Center, New Mexico)

• [Delfino] was held in segregation for four months, justifying their decision on the basis that [Delfino] presented “effeminately.” Facility staff refused to provide [Delfino] a Bible and permitted him only one hour of recreation – in a cold nine- by-thirteen-foot cell – per day. (Houston Processing Center, Texas)

• [Monica] continues to be denied hormone therapy, despite her use of hormones for ten years prior to immigration detention, and her physical and psychological reliance on them. [Monica], now detained for over five months, told NIJC staff, “I can’t even look at myself in the mirror anymore,” due to returning facial and body hair and other distressing changes. [Monica], an asylum seeker who has suffered grave past abuse in Mexico, also received no treatment for her trauma- related depression. She attempted suicide in February 2011 – the facility put her in solitary confinement as punishment. (Santa Ana City Jail, California)

• [Alexis] was repeatedly called a “faggot” by guards, who also made jokes about her dying of AIDS. They singled her out for public searches in which they forced her to remove her outer clothing and mocked her exposed breasts. (Theo Lacy Facility, California)

Break out the circumcision jokes

As the Life+Style editor here, I get a lot of pitches for stories. Lately, people have been really hawking the Bible (“Who was Moses?,” “How can we get kids to read the Bible more?”), but easily the oddest one today was this from the Jewish Community Center of Dallas, which is hosting a one-night-only performance of a comedy — yes, comedy — called Circumcise Me. OK, now the flier itself describes the show as “on the cutting edge” so they at least get the joke, but really? I mean, where can we go with this?

So I throw it out there to you: What are your favorite zingers to describe this kind of show? I’ll get us started: “Might as well bring your friends — after all, the mohel, the merrier”… or how about, “Four stars? I give it foreskins!” … or maybe, “A slice of life story.”

Let’s hear yours.

The Bible on the gays, the truth might surprise you

Jennifer Wright Knust, writing at CNN:

We often hears that Christians have no choice but to regard homosexuality as a sin – that Scripture simply demands it.

As a Bible scholar and pastor myself, I say that Scripture does no such thing.

“I love gay people, but the Bible forces me to condemn them” is a poor excuse that attempts to avoid accountability by wrapping a very particular and narrow interpretation of a few biblical passages in a cloak of divinely inspired respectability.

Truth is, Scripture can be interpreted in any number of ways. And biblical writers held a much more complicated view of human sexuality than contemporary debates have acknowledged.

Sir Ian McKellen Is Still Ripping Up The Bible

I do, yes. It’s Leviticus 18:22 that I object to. And I only do it when I’m in a hotel room and there’s a Bible in the drawer next to the bed. I don’t want those nasty, homophobic sentences lying within 12 inches of my head. I’m the sort of person who doesn’t write in ink. I only write in pencil so it can be rubbed out. I never turn down the corner of a book. I respect books, but what I don’t respect is that particular little verse. It’s not the whole of the book. … I don’t mind there being injunctions against eating shellfish or the injunctions against wearing cotton and wool clothing. I only get offended when it suggests that men shouldn’t make love to each other.

—Sir Ian McKellan, whose hotel room behavior is slightly above that of Charlie Sheen

Gene Robinson on the Bible, Homosexuality

GENE ROBINSON X390 (GETTY) | ADVOCATE.COM“We cannot … isolate these passages about homosexual acts and impute
to them the kind of enduring authority which we ascribe to nothing
before or after,” the Episcopal Church’s first openly gay bishop writes of Old Testament prohibitions on gay sex.

Cultural Environment in Bible Belt promotes Gay Hate Crimes

Another obvious hate crime occurs in Tulsa, Oklahoma. These kinds of attacks are starting to get the attention and recognition from the local media that they deserve, but we have a long way to go before we are treated the same way as other suspect classes when they are attacked simply for being who they are.

Actually, a straight friend of mine was the one who notified me of this particular attack. He wanted to relay his experience at his day labor job site where he was working. He was disturbed that his coworkers, who consisted of four blue collar types, were not the least bit ashamed to laugh and make fun of the victim, during the segment on the local television news, while proclaiming, “Hahaha! That is what those f*ggots get for being there!” My friend felt compelled to tell me their reaction because he knows I’m active in civil rights for the LGBT community. If our government is serious about sending any message to our LGBT youth that “It gets better,” then they need to follow through on the promises made to our community that we will no longer be treated as second class citizens, and subject to state sanctioned discrimination and even violent assaults simply for being gay.

There is a pervasive cultural attitude by certain segments of society, especially in the southern United States, that LGBT people deserve to be attacked. There was a time when African Americans experienced this treatment and was completely ignored by the state. Imagine what would happen on a job site had an African American been assaulted and the workers taunted the victim by saying, “The (n-word) deserved what he got for being there!” Yes, less than sixty years ago those words would have been tolerated, embraced and even celebrated as part of the Southern culture. It was wrong then, and it is wrong now, even though they’ve simply chosen the LGBT community as their acceptable state sanctioned scapegoat.

Maybe next Thanksgiving we will be able to celebrate being more full and equal citizens of our own country? This Thanksgiving I’m thankful for the resolve to never give up and keep fighting until we have every single right all other Americans enjoy.

Anti-gay Rep. Sally Kern: ‘What I think doesn’t matter. What the Bible says is what counts’

Anti-gay Oklahoma State Rep. Sally Kern and Democratic opponent Brittany Novotny, a transgender woman, appeared on KFOR’s Flash Point over the weekend (video above). Novotny says on her website she wanted to have a town hall forum where she and Kern could address issues of concern to House District 84 residents, but Kern wouldn’t agree to the format. So instead they went on Flash Point. The clip is worth watching in its entirety, but here’s a snippet:

HOST: Do you have a problem with Brittany’s lifestyle, somebody who’s transitioned from a man to a woman through surgical and medicinal means?

KERN: “Well that’s a great question and I have to answer it like this with another question. As Christians are we supposed to believe and obey the Bible?  The Bible says in Psalm 139, it says God created us, he formed us in our mother’s womb, and we’re fearfully and wonderfully made. And so what I think doesn’t matter. It’s what the Bible says is what counts, and that’s what I try to live my life by. But you know the Bible also says God loves every one one of us, has a purpose and a plan for every one of us, forgives each one of us if we come to him and humbly ask his forgiveness. I can’t judge anyone’s heart and have never tried to do that, although I’ve been accused of that. But you know, it’s not the norm, I’ll just say that.”

The race between Novotny and Kern was also featured in The New York Times over the weekend, in an article about transgender candidates across the country:

Not that gender issues have not been raised in some campaigns. In the Oklahoma House race, Ms. Novotny — who had a sex change operation in 2007 — shrugged off a recent e-mail from Charlie Meadows, the chairman of a conservative political action committee, which referred to her as an “it.”

“That’s just the typical politics I would expect out of that side,” she said. “And frankly it’s what voters are tired of.”

Texas Rep. Louie Gohmert: Homosexuality is adultery in the Ten Commandments

Discussing “don’t ask don’t tell” on the Family Research Council’s Washington Watch Weekly radio program on Friday, Congressman Louie Gohmert, R-Texas, offered his response to those who point out that the Bible — if you read it closely and all — doesn’t really appear to condemn homosexuality per se:

“Some people say, ‘Where is homosexuality in violation of the Ten Commandments?’ Well, it’s adultery. It’s sexual relations outside of marriage, a man and a woman. Of course there are other verses that reference these specific acts, men lusting after men, etc., but specifically for the military, when anyone, whether they’re homosexual or heterosexual, cannot control their hormones to the point that they are a distraction to the good order and discipline of the military, then they need to be removed from the military.”

Gohmert goes on to agree that if DADT is repealed, the military would have to change its policies to allow “heterosexual immorality.”

“Well of course it would,” he says. “Well, I say of course it would. You would think that. But of course we’ve already shown through Congress that homosexuality deserves a more precious and privileged position just by some of the laws that we’ve passed.”

Gohmert is likely referring to the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Act, which he suggested last year could lead to the legalization of things like pedophilia, necrophilia and bestiality.

A Bible lesson gone horribly wrong

Some of the things that land in my inbox are from seriously disturbed people. I wasn’t the only one on the distro list for this batsh*ttery, but I had to share it with you.

I am warning you, this one starts off nutty and goes downhill fast. It’s below the fold.

God created the heavens and earth and all the animals. And he created a garden of eden from which he created man from the dust. He called this man Adam. After a while God saw that Adam was lonely.

So he caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam and while Adam slept God opened Adam’s side and took one of his ribs and created a woman to be a companion for Adam. This woman was called Eve. Eve was bone of Adam’s bone and flesh of Adam’s flesh. God created Eve as a soulmate and companion for Adam. When God created Adam and Eve they had no knowledge of evil. They only had the goodness of God. God did not give Adam and Eve the knowledge of evil or the power to have sex and create. All God wanted was Adam and Eve in the garden of eden and  the animals on the earth. Adam and Eve would never destroy  the garden of eden and the animals would never destroy the earth.

That’s why God created the garden of eden. That was Adam and Eve’s home for eternity. Lucifer was one of God’s angels. God called Lucifer the morning star. He rose up in evil against God and God drove him from heaven. In order to get back at God, Lucifer came down to the garden of eden and put the evil in the tree of knowledge of good. Then it became the tree of knowledge of good and evil. God saw the evil and warned Adam and Eve not to touch it or eat from it or they would surely die. Then God went away and while he was gone Lucifer tried to get Eve to eat from the tree. Eve told Lucifer that they would surely die. Lucifer lied and said that they would live forever. He told them that he would make them into Gods. Eve fell for Lucifer’s lies and she did eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

Then she got Adam to eat from it. When they did their eyes were opened and they saw that they were naked. That’s when they gained the knowledge and the power to have sex and create. They covered themselves up with fig leaves and ran and hid from God. God found them and condemed them both. God drove them from the garden of eden never to return. Then God punished Lucifer by turning him into a snake to eat the dust of the other animals for eternity. Adam and Eve still had a choice. They could have gone with the goodness of God and not had sex or they could go with the evil and the power that Lucifer gave them. They chose the evil and the power that Lucifer gave them. Then they started lying and said it was God’s way. But it wasn’t God’s way it was Lucifer’s way of worse than worse than incest. When Adam had sex with Eve he was having sex with his own flesh. Eve was bone of his bone and flesh of his flesh.

Now I am going to explain what I mean by worse than worse than incest. If Adam came from the dust and Eve came from the dust there would be no incest between them. And what ever they created would be a true son and a true daughter. When the true son and true daughter had sex to keep the population going that would have been incest. And what ever they created would have been closer flesh. A true brother and sister committing incest cannot create a son or daughter. They create closer flesh because the flesh is closer than they were to begin with. So that way would have been incest and closer flesh. If Adam came from the dust and Eve came from the dust and they had true sons and daughters and Adam had sex with his daughters and Eve had sex with her sons to keep the population going that would have been worse than incest and they would have created closer than closer flesh. The closer the flesh the worse the incest.

The way it happened was that Adam had sex with his own flesh. So that was worse than worse than incest and they created closer than closer than closer flesh. So when you marry someone you are marrying someone that is 3 times closer than a true brother and sister. That’s why people create birthdefects and deformaties.

We are all birthdefects because we all have the knowledge of evil. We all came from worse than worse than incest and we are still the same. There is no such thing as grand ma and grand pa or mother and father or sister and brother or uncle and aunt or nephew and niece or any other name. It was made up by Adam and Eve and their generations. We are simply Adam’s flesh having sex with Adam’s flesh and what ever you create is Adam’s flesh. Jesus came from Mary having sex with another man while Joseph was off fighting in a war. Jesus grew up and found out the truth from the priests who didn’t get married and have sex.

But the priests were afraid to tell everyone because they were afraid they would be killed. So Jesus found 12 other men and he told them the truth. And with their help he tried to tell everyone that in the eyes of God they were all brothers and sisters and that they were committing incest by getting married and having sex. They all got upset and angry and crucified him. Jesus went back to the dust just like everyone before him and after him. Just where God told Adam and Eve they would go.

From dust you came and dust you shall return. Jesus was a 33 year old virgin who gave his life trying to keep the generations from being born from sin into a sinful world.

Long before Jesus was born there were thousands of slaves that ran off around the world and started their own countries. When these slaves ran off there was a large group of men that took off and ended up in Africa. Some of them were giants as tall as 9 ft. or even  taller. The giant named Goliath that David killed with his slingshot was 9 ft. tall.

Some of these men went exploring to Borneo and used ropes to catch female orangutans and took them to South America and had sex with them and eventually created the Indians. The men that stayed in Africa used ropes to catch female gorillas and had sex with them and eventually created the Africans. When scientists found the bones in Africa they thought we evolved naturally from a female chimpanzee.

But it wasn’t a natural evolution it was a man made evolution. That’s where Bigfoot and the Orangutan creatures come from. They are half man and half gorilla and half man and half orangutan. They use to call the Indians the red man. The orangutan has reddish hair.

When those men bred out the hair the Indian’s skin remained red. The gorilla has black hair and skin. When those men bred out the hair the African’s skin remained black. Some of the Indians and Africans are tall. And some of the Bigfoot and Orangutan creatures are tall. They are tall because some of the men that created them were tall.

Bigfoot migrated up through Africa and came into the United States at the top of Africa when they were connected by land. The Orangutan creatures migrated up through Central America and came into the United States like the Indians did later on.

The first Europeans that saw the Africans said that some of the African women had genitals that resembled that of a gorilla. If you look at the nose of an African you will notice that it is wide like the gorilla’s nose. We are worse than worse than incest and worse than worse than bestiality.
