LISTEN: Of Montreal’s “Dour Percentage”

Following up their music counterparts Scissor Sisters, Of Montreal drops a peek of its new album Paralytic Streaks which is slated for an early February release. Pitchfork posted the preview song “Dour Percentage” and linked to an interview with singer (and sexually liberated) Kevin Barnes about the album.

The band also hits the road this year coming to Dallas to play at Trees on March. 13.

Spin analyzed the hell out of the song here, but I thought it was an admirable effort. I don’t see too much of a difference as Spin does save for a lack of high energy punch, but it has that certain motif OM is famous for.

This isn’t the priest you kneel down to and make your confessions. Judas Priest demands that you stand up, raise your arms and rock the hell out. Especially now as they hit the road on their Epitaph Farewell Tour. What will we do without our original leather daddy and out lead singer Rob Halford to scream into our ears?

Driver’s Seat: Mark Trimble, Flutist

Name: Mark Trimble, 44.

Occupation: Musician (flute) and music educator.

How might we know you: My partner Ami Sadeh and I helped create the BearDance events.

Type of car: Blue 2008 Nissan Altima Coupe.

Best car memory? Driving my Nissan 350Z the first time with my partner around town with the top down!

Funniest road trip story: I don’t know if it’s funny or sad, but I had an audition in Tennessee and a drunk driver sliced off a big chunk of metal off the side of the trunk. It was my dad’s Oldsmobile Delta 88. I had to tie that chunk of metal back on the car as it flapped all the way back to Cincinnati where I lived.

Hmmm… we vote sad. OK, buy or lease? Lately I prefer leasing. I get the itch for something new or different about every three to four years. It doesn’t hurt that you can get a bit more car for less money per month!

You play the flute, but ever in the car? I think I’ve played it in my partner’s car while he’s been driving. It’s not at all practical for the driver and it doesn’t work well in the passenger seat either. There are better places to practice. Now I will practice finger patterns for music on the steering wheel from time to time though, and that’s a great way to practice without the instrument.

What do you jam out to? NPR or BPM on satellite radio. Sometimes it’s Beethoven or Lady Gaga.

Don’t you musclebear types drive Jeeps or big trucks usually? Am I really that now? Ha! Maybe I do need to get the requisite truck!  I’m not about all my image with my car, it’s more about the driving experience for me, and I like fun-to-drive cars usually as long as they are roomy enough for me.

Since it’s hot as hell out, how’s your A/C? It is fantastic! I’m lucky to have a garage to park in at home so that it’s not all heated up when I leave the house in the summer, but even when it’s been out in the sun, it cools down very quickly.

Sounds great. So, one last thing: flootist or flautist? Well, it can be both actually.

Disorder in the court — again

Last week, all hell broke loose in the Dallas County Commissioners Court meeting when some folks angry over what was, in effect, the firing of County Elections Administrator Bruce Sherbert decided to express that anger to the person they considered primarily responsible for something they saw as unfair: Commissioner John Wiley Price.

One speaker, Dallas lawyer Jeff Turner, a white man, used the term “chief mullah” in referring to Price, who is black. Price said he heard Turner say, “chief moolah” and considered it a racist term. Price, in term, noted that all the speakers criticizing him were white and suggested they all “Go to hell.”  He reportedly told the speakers to go to hell several times, and even said, “You too, fat boy,” to another speaker.

Today, though, County Judge Clay Jenkins was determined not to let things get out of hand. But some folks, according to this report by Dallas Morning News, went a little too far. DMN says Jenkins refused to allow any speaker to say anything at all critical about the court as a whole or any of the commissioners — something that those who got gaveled down by Jenkins considered to be downright unconstitutional.

What did Commissioner Price think? His comment was, “You wanted decorum, you got decorum.”

The Morning News also reports that the court has passed a new code of conduct for themselves, but didn’t say what the new conduct requires.

My favorite part of the whole thing though was this comment posted on the DMN story by a reader: “I miss [openly gay former County] Judge [Jim] Foster already.”

Watch: The ‘Hell Yeah I’m Gay’ Rap Song You Won’t Be Able To Forget

"Hell yeah I'm gay / And I don't care what people say / Hell yeah I'm gay / And I will never change my ways." And so begins my new personal anthem! Or rather, it's the (new?) track from … actually, I have no idea. And that's where I need your help! I'm always on the search for pro-gay songs that aren't, well, crappy and cheesy (e.g. Reichen Lehmkuhl's "Up To The Sky"). And with lyrics like, "Society hates me / 'Cause I love the pussy / Church is scared of me / 'Cause to them, they think I'm the devil's parody," well, that's exactly what "I'm Gay" isn't. (And check out the closing shot, with the t-shirt for Mitrice Richardson.) From the opening credits we see the video is a production of DJ and music video proudcer Marcus "CRASH" Miller, but that's as far as the clues lead me. Who are this proud ladies?

2012 GOP Clown Car Bigot Tim Pawlenty: if elected President, he’ll reinstate DADT

It’s nice to know that former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty is telegraphing his priorities for the country early on as he prepares to jump in and fasten his seatbelt to ride in the 2012 GOP Clown Car.

He kneels before the gay-hating Bryan Fischer of the American Family Association and talks about GOProud attending CPAC, his views on “traditional marriage” and other bootlicking maneuvers to please the fundie listeners. (Right Wing Watch):

Fischer: Now the Left, and homosexual activists and organizations like GOProud, one of their stated agendas is to overturn the Defense of Marriage Act, the federal law that defines marriage in federal law and for federal purposes as a union of one man and one woman. The Obama administration has made a tepid and pretty ineffective defense of that law – if you become president and that law faces a challenge under your administration, how vigorously will you defend DOMA? What will you do to make sure it’s defended?

Pawlenty: I believe strongly in traditional marriage. I was co-author of the law in Minnesota that defined marriage as between a man and a woman. I’ve been a vocal supporter of an amendment in Minnesota that would put that into our constitution. I hope that the day comes when it is put before the voters of Minnesota. And it’s not just a legal issue; it’s also an important cornerstone for our society and our culture. I mean, families and traditional marriage is so important to that and I don’t believe all other domestic relations should be on the same platform as traditional marriage, I just don’t buy and so I’ve been a strong supporter of traditional marriage. I also think who you appoint to courts in this regard is important and we don’t have litmus tests, so to speak, but we want strict constructionists and people who take a conservative view toward the interpretation of our laws.

…Fischer: One last question, got about forty five seconds left, put you on the hot seat one more time: we just saw the ban on homosexual service in the military repealed, overturned. Conservatives will be working over the next couple of years to see that that ban is reinstated. If you become president in 2012, will you work to reinstate the prohibition on open homosexual service in the military? Would you sign such a prohibition if it got to your desk?

Pawlenty: Bryan, I have been a public and repeat supporter of maintaining Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. There’s a lot of reasons for that, but if you look at how the combat commanders and the combat units feel about it, the results of those kinds of surveys were different than the ones that were mostly reported in the newspaper and that is something I think we need to pay attention to. But I have been a public supporter of maintaining Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell and I would support reinstating it as well.

‘Gay Boy’ makes D Magazine’s ‘Best in Music’

I was glad to see someone took notice of Farah’s dreamy single “Gay Boy.” I hardly expected it to be the peeps at D magazine, but since it won’t be on my list, props to Christopher Mosley for giving it attention.

The song, which came out back in March, was annoying as hell in the beginning for me, but then her lyrics, or talking rather, grew increasingly clever. How many girls did/do we know like this? All in all, it’s a flash of brilliance with lyrics like How could I dance in these heels?/How could I not?

CNN: DMV Employee Resigns Over Letter Condemning Customer To Hell

Well, this is relatively good news, although the outcome could have been better. CNN is reporting the following in their piece DMV Employee Resigns Over Letter Condemning Customer To Hell:

A California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) employee who allegedly wrote a letter to a transgender woman and condemned her to hell has resigned, officials said Thursday.

The employee, who worked for the DMV for two years, resigned Wednesday and will not receive benefits or unemployment, according to department spokesman Mike Marando.

“This in no way diminishes the severity of the situation,” Marando said, adding officials believe the DMV employee’s behavior was an isolated matter.

The attorney for the transgender woman said the employee should have been fired, instead of being allowed to resign.

Amber Yust has taken out a restraining order on Thomas Demartini, the now former DMV employee. If you read the letter from Thomas Demartini, you get an idea of why Amber took out the restraining order:

On Thursday, October 21,2010, I helped you get a driver’s license or ID card at the San Francisco DMV. I noticed that you were changing your name and had supporting documents for the change. As I recall one of those documents outlined something to do with a gender change.

Neither … the effeminate nor Iiers with mankind … shall posses the Kingdom of God:(l Corinthians 6:9-10). The homosexual act is one of the sins that cries to heaven for vengeance. Supporting those who commit this act and encouraging and justifying those who have the orientation also lead one to hell.

Romans 1:21-32 explains how the homosexual orientation is connected with worshiping visible things in the world rather than the One Who created them. If this orientation is the reason for an operation that has yet to occur (or is in the process), I beg you–DO NOT GO THROUGH WITH IT!

You can see that I do not support gender change operations. Consider Genesis 1:21: “Male and female he [God] created them”; and then Leviticus 19:28″: You shall not make any cuttings in your flesh.” Jesus clearly prohibits gender change operations. If an operation like this is the reason for changing one’s name, then one has made a very evil decision.

Although I helped you with the name change, I have to say I do not support the reason for it if it relates to the above. If it does I must say I do not approve of this name change, and I also do not believe the state’s recognition of it through official documents-makes it legitimate or any less evil

Someone who engages in the kind of behavior that Demartini is alleged to have engaged in shouldn’t be allowed to resign, but instead he should have been be fired. In my opinion, the California DMV should have fired Demartini if their inquiry verified he sent the letter — that, to me, would have been a more optimal outcome. Specifically culling out a woman who is from a protected class due to her gender identity should be treated in the harshest manner — especially since Demartini has a history of not treating transgender people with dignity and respect — he’s apparently has previously engaged in antitransgender behavior on the job at the DMV.

Basically, how Amber Yust is alleged to have been mistreated is beyond the pale unacceptable. The perpetrator of any kind of discrimination against someone who belongs to a protected class should be fired, not be allowed to resign.
