Obama taps Hagel despite opposition from LGBT groups, right-wingers

Chuck Hagel

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz probably didn’t expect his first major stand in the U.S. Senate to be firmly on the same side as his LGBT constituents.

But Cruz and LGBT groups — along with right-wing supporters of Israel, some Jewish groups and many Democrats who want a Democrat appointed — are united in their opposition to the nomination of Sen. Chuck Hagel as defense secretary. Sen. John Cornyn also said he opposes Hagel’s nomination.

Cruz said on Fox News Sunday he couldn’t imagine supporting Hagel because of his anti-Israel positions.

Log Cabin Republicans has been among the most vocal of Hagel’s LGBT opponents. Log Cabin, which took a leading role in the repeal of “don’t ask, don’t tell,” took out full-page ads last week in the New York Times and today in the Washington Post opposing the nomination. In 2011, Log Cabin won a lawsuit challenging DADT that resulted in a ruling by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ordering the federal government to stop enforcing it. The ruling came after repeal legislation passed but before final enactment.

Israel Luna’s “Ouija Experiment” screens at Inwood’s midnight movie this weekend

Israel Luna is used to working just as hard getting his movies to his public as making them — such is the life of the independent filmmaker. His Ticked-Off Trannies with Knives made it to the Tribeca and other film fests, but he’s taken an old-school roadshow approach to his latest, The Ouija Experiment.

Without a distributor, Luna has been taking the print of his low-budget horror film around the country himself, showing it wherever there’s an audience. And what better audience than his hometown for a traditional midnight screening? Ouija will show Friday and Saturday nights at the Inwood — fitting, since the movie was shot locally.

It looks pretty scary to us, too — just check out the trailer below.

I’ll be on Israel Luna’s ‘The 10%’ today, but there’s a 0% chance I’ll be taking my clothes off

I’ll be on The 10% with Israel Luna at 3 p.m. today. Not sure what all we’ll be discussing, but you can bet it’ll be damned enlightening, and I’ll try to put no more than 10 percent of my foot in my mouth. You can watch the program live here. Just don’t expect me to take my clothes off.

You may see Israel Luna’s burning bush today

On today’s very special episode of The 10%, host Israel Luna and company are going to broadcast nekked. Yes, nude radio and video streaming. Why? Well, according to Facebook, “to strip down the issue of nudity.”

“One of of the topics on Tuesday is how America is okay with TV shows raping women, killing them, slaughtering them, shooting them (CSI, L&O, House, Dexter, etc.) but aren’t okay with nudity,” Luna posted Sunday on his Facebook. Which was followed by this male-heavy poster:

A slightly different tone came from today’s post (yes, also from FB) saying, “Like being naked? Thought about being naked with others in public? You may not be the only one.” Whoa. From rape to just being nude, clearly today’s episode will cover (nyuk) a wide range of nude issues while the host and panel broadcast in their birthday suits. I may have to watch to see if the subsequent show’s hosts wipe down their seats.

The 10% airs today on RationalBroadcasting.com at 3 p.m. Video of the show streams online from the site as well. We’ve fallen for it so we’ll be there. Today’s poster is after the jump.

Israel Says Goodbye To Dancing With The Stars’ First Same-Sex Pairing

It was fun while it lasted: Israel's same-sex dancing partners Gili Shem Tov (the married lesbian sportscaster) and Dorit Milman (her professional partner) were voted off the country's Dancing With The Stars, thus becoming the first gay pairing of the TV franchise to appear, and disappear.

Joel Burns is YouTube Gold

Joel Burns

Joel Burns hit the top of the YouTube charts with his anti-bullying video and it’s having an impact, as we wrote in this week’s Dallas Voice.

On Thursday, the two-week-old “It Gets Better” video hit 2 million views. It continues to receive more than 2,000 views per hour.

For the month it is the most discussed video in News & Politics and received the most votes as favorite video this month as well.

And the video is popular around the world.

It’s the No.1 1 News & Politics video this month in Sweden.

In News & Politics, it’s No. 2 in Canada and the United Kingdom, and in Australia and Ireland, it’s No. 3.

It’s in the top 10 in India, Israel, New Zealand, South Africa and France. Although not as popular in Russia, it’s still ranks No. 105 there and it hasn’t been translated into Russian, as far as I know.

In all, the video gets 46 YouTube honors.

According to the YouTube map, it’s been seen in every country in the world except a couple in central Africa.

Through yesterday, the daily number of viewers has continued to steadily grow. The YouTube page has gotten more than 27,000 comments. Of the 2 million views, only 525 clicked dislike before leaving the page.

A Tale of 2 Gay Refugees: The Serbian In America, The Palestinian In Israel

Atlanta: The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has ordered the Board of Immigration Appeals to review Mladen Zeljko Todorovic's gay asylum case, where he claims to have fled Serbia after being "raped by other soldiers when he served in the Serbian army, beaten by police officers and disowned by his father." Tel Aviv: Majed Koka, a Palestinian man who escaped to Israel 12 years ago at age 14 after facing anti-gay threats, and now lives with his Israeli partner, is still waiting to hear whether he'll be granted residency on amnesty grounds. In the meantime he's managed to get arrested nine times in 12 years.
