LA Fitness reportedly fires employee who was accused of calling customer a 'faggot'

An employee at LA Fitness on Mockingbird Lane who was accused of calling a customer a “faggot” has been fired, according to another employee at the gym who spoke to Dallas Voice on condition of anonymity.

Representatives at LA Fitness’ corporate office in California have failed to respond to numerous phone calls seeking comment since the incident was first reported to the newspaper 11 days ago.

Gay LA Fitness customer Jason Evans, 36, alleges that on Sunday, Nov. 8, employee Mark Ramirez twice said to him, “Have a good workout, faggot.” Read Evans’ full account of the incident by going here.

The LA Fitness employee who spoke to Dallas Voice anonymously said Ramirez was fired earlier this week after a thorough investigation. The employee said the company took Evans’ allegation very seriously but also didn’t want to make any rash judgments.

While the case amounted to Evans’ word against Ramirez’s, the investigation determined that even if Ramirez didn’t use the word “faggot,” he treated Evans inappropriately, according to the employee.

The employee said while numerous customers at the heavily gay gym have inquired about the incident, only two have actually cancelled their memberships.

Evans couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.

Gay man says employee at LA Fitness on Mockingbird twice called him a 'faggot'

A gay man says an employee at the newly opened LA Fitness in The Shops at Mockingbird near Love Field twice called him a “faggot” on Sunday.

The man, 36-year-old Jason Evans, said he’s notified the gym’s management and plans to file a complaint with the city of Dallas, which has an ordinance prohibiting anti-gay discrimination in public accommodations.

An employee who answered the phone Monday at LA Fitness, 4540 W. Mockingbird Lane, said no one at the gym could comment on the incident.

“We’re actually not allowed to discuss it,” said the employee, who identified himself as an assistant manager. “If you’d like any kind of statement, you’d have to contact the corporate office.”

Asked whether he was aware of the incident, the assistant manager said, “Yes sir, and it’s being addressed. … All I can do is tell you to contact the corporate office.”

Calls to LA Fitness’ corporate office were placed on hold Monday. To read Evans’ account of the incident, jump with me.
