“Country Gravy” dishes out relationship advice at Theater LaB Houston

Julia Laskowski and Patti Rabaza play the fiesty southern ladies with an opinion on everything

Anyone who’s lived in the south long enough knows this woman. She may be found at the local beauty salon, or in the canned foods aisle at the Piggly Wiggly, and her attendance at church potlucks is mandatory. Wherever you find her she knows exactly what you’re doing wrong in your relationship and how to fix it. From January 13 through 29 you can see her and her friends in all their glory in Country Gravy and Other Obsessions at Theater LaB Houston (1706 Alamo), produced by Magic Butterfly Productions. Co-writers and stars Julia Kay Laskowski and Patti Rabaza play two Texas women who decide that their myriad opinions on matters of the heart qualify them to lead a relationship seminar. When their antiquated attitudes meet real-world relationships musical hilarity ensues.

The original production features Aaron Ellisor on the piano and is directed and choreographed by Michael Tapley. Tickets are $25 and are available by calling the theater Box Office at 713-868-7516

‘Five Women’ today at Contemporary Theatre of Dallas

No catfights over these outfits

Being a bridesmaid is a thankless job, as the ladies know in Five Women Wearing the Same Dress. The Alan Ball (American Beauty, True Blood) play shows irreverence toward the custom as the ladies hide away from their duties and begin to bond over their experience in lamé.

DEETS: Contemporary Theatre of Dallas, 5601 Sears St. 2 p.m. Through July 17. $27–$32. ContemporaryTheatreOfDallas.com.

HRC Is Hosting Ladies’ Night, If That Feels All Right

This Sunday, Jan. 16, the Human Rights Campaign will host more than two dozen ladies' nights nationwide at bars like Haute in West Hollywood, Middle East in Cambridge, Escape in Las Vegas, and Crystal Ballroom in Portland. (New York's event has been postponed until February "due to unforeseen issues with our venue.") What's all this about? It's called "Her HRC," and it's billed as a lesbian celebration of, well, lesbians. Okay, the official description reads: "Join thousands of women in cities across the country for a national night of celebration! Her HRC is a time for us to come together as women in support of equality for the LGBT community and have fun!" On Facebook some 181 of you say you're attending, which works out to about seven people per city, but you know what they say about Facebook RSVPs: they're so non-committal, you can expect people who say they're coming to skip it. But the Facebook data doesn't mean people don't attend these things; from the look of the videos from past Her HRC events, they appear to have some pretty good turnout. But if Her HRC is about getting women drunk, it's equally about getting women to join HRC's roster: The – tickets get you in the door and add you to in HRC's donor roll, paying for an annual "membership" to "the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization." NOW WHO'S BUYING THE FIRST ROUND?
