Margie Phelps’ Speaks Out On Cordoba House, Illustrating Political Overlap

Margiephelps

Fred Phelps and his Westboro Baptist Church catch a lot of flack for their anti-gay, anti-America, anti-everything protests. The family shouldn’t be dismissed as simple right wing nuts, though, because their politics aren’t always so different than those found on the left.

Take, for example, Margie Phelps’ remarks about Cordoba House, the so-called “Ground Zero Mosque,” which she supports. “We say we’re the melting pot, we say you get the practice your faith according to your conscience with no restraint from the government, you have that liberty. Why, against that framework, would anybody be so un-American as to suggest that Muslim Americans cannot worship their God according to their conscience,” said Phelps, who argued Westboro’s case before the Supreme Court earlier this week. Similar arguments have been made by people on the left, like Keith Olbermann.

But of course Phelps, who’s Fred’s daughter, couldn’t resist getting in a low, decidedly discriminatory blow, telling Talking Points Memo, “Now [Islam is] a false religion, no question about that, but they don’t have to agree with me on that.”

As for the Supreme Court case, in which Westboro claims their First Amendment rights are being curtailed, Phelps said, “You’ve got 310 million saying ‘God Bless America.’ You’ve got 60 saying ‘God Curse America.’ That stinking First Amendment isn’t worth the paper it’s written on unless it protects those 60.”

If nothing else, the Westboro Church should show us that politics isn’t always black and white: people who are you rivals on one issue may be the closet ally on another.

Eddie Long Accuser Jamal Parris Speaks Out: ‘He Was Like A Dad To Me’

Jamalparris

Jamal Parris, one of the four men who have accused anti-gay Pastor Eddie Long of sexual abuse, spoke out about the trauma yesterday.

Here's a bit of what the 24-year old told Atlanta's Fox affiliate about the alleged violations, and how Long "seduced" him into a place of submission:

His presence alone is seduction to a young man without a father. You look at him and he's everything you want to be, he's everything you see and you dream to be and being around him, it's almost like a drug. You can't believe the places you've added to your life and the cars that you're driving and the people that you're meeting, so it becomes 'If I want to continue to feel this love and this power, I'll do whatever my dad wants me to…'

If Parris and his peers are telling the truth, then Long's far sicker than any of us may have imagined.

Watch: Alveda King Speaks At NOM Event In Atlanta

Martin Luther King, Jr.'s niece, Dr. Alveda King, spoke in front of another lowly attended NOM event during the Atlanta stop of their Hate-a-Palooza "Summer for Marriage Tour."

King

Even with an ever-growing population in the US and all over the world, King told the small crowd that humans could face extinction if gays and lesbians were allowed to marry.

Said King:

"I come from a long line of Christian soldiers…we know that people of virtually every faith and culture agree that marriage is a union between a man and woman…marriage of a man and a woman remains the guard against human extinction."

Marriage equality supporters once again greatly outnumbered those of NOM's attendees – only 30 bigots showed up this time. By contrast, about 300 people supporting marriage equality counter-protested the event. One local NOM supporter said he was "so disappointed more people didn’t show up.”

NOM has faced low attendance at their rallies since the start of their tour, but, according to the GA Voice, Brian Brown is now saying that bigots are staying away because they feel intimated by the harassment they've faced from marriage equality supporters. As we've seen before, apparently blocking someone's view is what they consider harassment. Guess they're still painting themselves as victims.

ATLANTA: MLK’s Niece Betrays Heritage And Speaks At NOM’s Hate Tour

And she did it today before an all-time low Hate Tour crowd of FIFTEEN, versus over 250 of the good guys. The Courage Campaign quotes Alveda King: “I don’t know about you but I’m not ready to be extinct,” King said to the crowd after pointing out that “it is statistically proven” that marriage between one man and one woman is the foundation of society.
