Michael Doughman, left, and Ty Herndon

During his Outrageous Oral presentation at the Rose Room last night (Thursday, May 21), charity drag queen Michael Lee aka Michael Doughman announced that out country star Ty Herndon will perform in Reverchon Park as part of Dallas’ Pride celebration in September.

Doughman is executive director of the Dallas Tavern Guild, which stages Dallas Pride.

The Pride parade and festival takes place on Sunday, Sept. 20. The festival has been moved from Lee Park to Reverchon Park this year for the first time.

Former Dallas resident Herndon came out in November 2014. He performed at Texas Gay Rodeo Association’s first Texas Tradition Rodeo Music Fest.

Rachel Potter takes on the hypocrites with ‘Jesus and Jezebel’

Screen shot 2015-05-12 at 3.30.18 PM

Rachel Potter

A lot of folks think that country-western music is still a stronghold of homophobia, and in some ways, it might be.

But not completely. I mean, way back in the 1990s, C&W superstar Garth Brooks was speaking out for LGBT folks in his song “We Shall Be Free.” He also appeared at the Equality Rocks held in conjunction with the 2000 LGBT march on Washington. In recent years, C&W stars Chely Wright and Ty Herndon have come out. And then there are queens of country, Dolly Parton and Reba McEntire, who have both been vocal in their support for LGBT equality.

And you can add an up-and-coming star to that list, too. Rachel Potter has just released a new song and video called “Jesus and Jezebel,” in which she explores not only her personal issues with her Southern Baptist upbringing, but calls out  church folk for their less-than-loving ways toward LGBT people.

Potter tells ETOnline: “”I think that country music listeners are becoming more and more open minded every day, as is the rest of the country. I think a lot of people may misconstrue the song to say I don’t believe in what the bible says or like, ‘gay sex for everybody’ but that’s not what I’m trying to say, and I’ll make that as clear as possible. All I’m trying to say is that I think Jesus loves us all the same.”

Was Ty Herndon really brave? I say yes

Ty Herndon and Chely Wright

So, Ty Herndon came out as a gay man this week. Some folks quickly applauded him for being so brave. Others said ya know, maybe he wasn’t so brave after all. I mean, he was already a star. He already had his hit songs. And there are already any number of other performers — singers, actors, etc. — who have come out. We already know you aren’t automatically killing your career by coming out.

Except that Ty Herndon is a country-western singer. That’s a little different. Sure, Chely Wright came out a few years ago, you might point out, and she’s a country-western singer. True. But how often have you seen her name at the top of the charts since she came out?

(C&W singer Billy Gilman came out Thursday, too, a few hours after Herndon, citing Herndon as his inspiration.)

I like country-western music. I always liked Chely Wright’s music, and I always liked Ty Herndon’s music. I hope that both of them see a resurgence in their careers soon, with LGBTs buying their music in a show of support if nothing else and with non-LGBT fans of C&W buying their music because it is just good music and the sexual orientation of the singers doesn’t make a damn bit of difference.

I’m LGBT and I am a C&W music fan. So I am gonna buy Ty Herndon’s new album for both reasons – to show support and because I like his new song, “Lies I Told Myself.” I like the video, below, too.

So here’s to you, Ty Herndon. You may not have been the first performer to come out, or even the first professional C&W singer. But I still think it took some courage. It always does, no matter who you are. I can’t say there won’t be some folks who condemn you for being gay, including some in our own tribe who might say you’re just looking for publicity. But count me among those who applaud you for being honest, who applaud you as a good entertainer, and who welcome you into the light.

(And by the way Chely Wright, if you’re listening, I’ll buy your new music, too.)

In honor of Ty Herndon having come out, let me share this video of one of my favorites of his songs. We should all be living in the moment.

Country music's Ty Herndon is back in the news…but not like that

Ty Herndon makes an appearance in a few minutes on channel 21′s Web site performing songs live for the channel’s Soundcheck. I’m not really sure why they are featuring him at a time no one will probably catch it. 2 p.m. guys? Really? UPDATE: That would be now.

But at least this appearance on the news isn’t like his infamous 1995 incident. He was arrested in Fort Worth at Gateway Park for allegedly soliciting sex from a male undercover cop. It didn’t help that he was also found  in possession of over two grams of methamphetamine. Ouch.сайты для копирайтингакак проверить индексацию страницы сайта в поисковиках
